Sher Ryn: Papa, can we go to 虎妈? Me: Huma? Sher Ryn: Yes, 虎妈 Me: What is Huma? Sher Ryn: Neh.. the one you brought us for the very nice noodle
It took me a while before figuring out what she was trying to say. It doesn't help that she's talking in half English half Chinese. But when the pickiest eater in the family requested for this place, I would take notice. I had only brought her there once when I learned about this awesome kampua place but I didn't expect her to remember the name. It was the last day of 2018 and my concern was if they opened during the new year so I had to call and ask. Green light and I quickly planned to come here the first thing in the morning - yes! Our very first meal at the turn of the year 2019.
We arrived slightly after 8am and they had just opened for business - I remembered queueing for table when we came for the first time - and this time we were the first ones to arrive. ◾ Kampua - available in the original version or with dark soy sauce version in which I ordered both for comparison. Both were good - the aroma of pork oil when you mixed the noodle, minced meat, fried shallot and spring onion were evident in every slurp. The generic char siew was nothing much to shout at but a source of protein. Just eat like that or mix with the chilly sauce. ◾ Kolo Mee - overshadowed completely by the Kampua hence it felt like very bland especially after eating the Kampua earlier. Perhaps those who prefer cleaner flavour will like this ◾ Bien nuik - nothing beats slurping the Sarawakian version of wantan - available in the original version where they serve with pork oil; with dark soy sauce; with soup; or simply deep fried. I went for the former ◾ They made awesome teh and kopi which is important criteria for me, as a good cup of teh/kopi always make my day! It's the best of both worlds.
My second time here and I found myself not getting enough of the Kampua, although I'd finished one whole bowl by myself plus scavenging the leftovers by my son and daughters. Have I fallen in love? Perhaps I did.. this is the best Kampua I'd tried so far in Klang - well, at least until a better one comes along. I have a hunch that I'll come here regularly especially and the small ones love this...
Read moreHad a magnificent breakfast with the kolo mee and wonton.
Kolo mee was perfectly cooked al dente, topped with a generous serving of shallots, minced pork and char siew and drenched slightly with lard. Every mouthful was packed with flavour and umami.
Wonton skin had just right thickness, not too thicc and not too thin. The ratio of wonton filling to skin was good, a solid mouthful of meat accompanies every bite. Tasted a very slight porky flavour to the meat, which can be solved with a few dashes of pepper on the table.
The homemade chilli sauce was a perfect accompaniment for both dishes, adding some spice and acidity to the meal.
Looking forward to my next visit!
2nd visit: Ordered the wonton with black sauce and spicy oil for a light breakfast. This version exceeded my expectations, and tasted as good as the original version wonton.
The wontons came in a bowl swimming in a broth mixture of lard, some soy sauce and spicy oil. I love that the wonton skins are so smooth and glistening from the broth. When served, the broth may seem too much, yet the wonton will soak up all the broth within a minute and retain the wonderful umami flavours of the lard, as well as sweet and spiciness of the soy sauce and spicy oil.
The spicy taste is mild and complements the soy sauce really well. Since I like spicy food, I'll request for more spicy oil to be added next time.
Upgraded my rating from 4 stars to 5 stars due to their great food, consistency, and quick service.
As always, looking forward to...
Read moreVisited for breakfast on a weekday morning, and perhaps due to the early hour, there was ample parking available. Despite it being a weekday, the restaurant was nearly full. We were promptly escorted to our table upon arrival and handed menus. The service was efficient, and our food arrived promptly.
Our order included one Minced Pork Kampua (Original/White) - RM8.30, one Minced Pork Kampua (Soy Sauce + Chilli/Black Red) - RM8.30, one Sibu Wantan Soup - RM8.30, and one Bursting Pork Ball - RM9.50. The Minced Pork Kampua was quite enjoyable, with the Soy Sauce + Chilli version leaning slightly towards sweetness. The noodles were perfectly cooked, and the chilli sauce complemented them well. The Sibu Wantan Soup was satisfactory, but the Bursting Pork Ball was just okay.
The restaurant was rather tidy, cosy and well-ventilated.The portion sizes of the food were standard, and the prices were reasonable. We were pleased to note that all the staff wore masks, aprons, and head coverings. Kudos...
