Smokey Joe — Restaurant in Isle Mauritius

I am rarely so disappointed. Sorry but honest review here, hope it helps to improve. Happened Thursday 10/04.

The restaurant has a cosy, beautiful, and neat ambiance, with a comfortable and original ordering system. However, service is poorly coordinated—understaffed, slow, and disorganized. Despite long wait times, they keep seating guests without informing them honestly.

Meals arrive in frustrating ~15-mins intervals which I saw 1st time ever. We are 3 on a table, only 1 person gets food and others wait 15-20mins more! I saw ready meals sit on the counter for 8+ mins (as shown on pic), yet no one serves them. Staff simply state when asked, "We are understaffed,” instead of offering a solution. I went over the counter after waiting 40mins for my wrap, ask them why not serve those food on counter, they will get cold and the lady replied happily "No they won't, this is a heated counter!" 😯 They were in a hurry to take orders but not to serve!

Food (Mac Attack & Wooly Smash) remained hot luckily but lacks quality—dry burgers, not worth the cost. Burgers quantity is fine, but quality is disappointing 😑

The lamb Bairut Wrap was the best 👌—hot, tasty, with a good sauce 😋

Overall, a dissatisfying experience as I expected better from what I heard. Ruining our 1 hour-long lunch break. Better communication would have made a difference. We understand it can happen to be understaff but just inform incoming customers "we are understaffed today, we might take longer to serve". Up to the customer and ok take 20mins to serve but bring the whole order so we can enjoy together, not watch people eating in turns! 🫤 they were serving 1 meal per table at a time that day 🙄😐😬

We had the Italian chicken burger - was not disappointed. The bun was fresh and the grilled chicken was juicy and not dry. We had a spicy dijon mustard dip to go with the sweet potato fries - the dip was good but not spicy. If you want something spicy, there’s a super spicy sauce (similar to tabasco) on the table. For the drinks we had the jungle berry and yuzu pear - both were good and refreshing (a little too sweet for my preference but still good). The service was top notch - weirdly there was no waiting time for a Friday night (was around 7:30 pm), the service was super quick (less than 15 mins to get everything), the waiters were polite. They have a small bottle of extreme chili sauce on each table.

Except they never advise you how strong and chemical it is !!!

IT IS SUPER STRONG AND WILL BURN YOUR MOUTH for 30 mins ! Even at a small dose.

My whole dinner got wasted and I was agonizing.

AS FOR THE FOOD ITSELF:

Let me explain.

A fair rating would be like 2.5 or 3 stars.

Had a Smash Joey burger and a Steak + fries.

The bun of the burger was STALE. The bread was falling apart once you cut through. SHAME right ?

Worst thing with the smash is that it has a STRONG fatty, greasy taste. Dunno what kinda meat they used for the patty.

The steak is just ok. very average but eatable.

Shame that the mushroom sauce was out of stock, i got served a pepper sauce which wasn’t nice at all.

FRIES WERE GREAT THOUGH ! That’s one positive !

Would not recommend unless one is out of options.
