Best torte in Cancun is at El piasano del 23 located in Mercado 23 , Cancun MX.
For the past 9 years or so I try and eat here as often as I can.
The sliced bun is not too thick and comes with a good slather of mayo, topped with a healthy mound of shredded cabbage/ cilantro mix, some tasty salsa verde (not too picante) and a generous heaping of unctuous, moist, tasty pork carnitas roasted in-house and kept warm on the flat top grill. Mmmmm. There is also a very picante salsa on the table that I only use a couple of drops of. Add a coke and it’s hard to beat. I only wish they sold beer.
Cost for 3 excellent torte and 2 bottles of coke was only $12 (not including tip).
The menu is simple: They only serve pork torte and pork tacos and beverages. Thats it.
The place is clean and there is a hand wash station for customers. You can sit on stools at a long counter surrounding the open kitchen or there are a smattering of tables and chairs on the back. They take peso or credit cards. Service is friendly and fast.
We also enjoy the larger market (Mercado 23) that el paisano is located in. In English- el paisano means “the countryman”. We think it’s a treat to get away from our resort and see and spend time around Mexican people going about their daily life - going to market, having lunch, getting their hair cut, buying a Christmas tree, or getting an appliance repaired.
Mercado 23 is located in the downtown “el Centro” part of Cancun. We take the R1 public bus from the hotel zone which is enlightening and cost 12 peso (about 60 cents in 2024). We ask the driver to help us know where to get off. The market is 1 short block away from the bus route on one of the the main streets in Cancun , Tulúm ave.
El paisano 23 is the place for an outstanding torte and a good excuse to get out and about with the countryman who are the engine of the cancun...
Read moreWhat can I say about this place? If you want to get a real Mexican champion breakfast, this is your place. If you come to Cancun and decide to go to Mercado de la 23 it’s an adventure that worth to try. The fruits, the herbs and a lot of fresh products combine with the esoteric ambience of the place give us a deep idea of how interesting is the Mexican cosmogony. After a nice walk, it’s good to have one of the amazing fresh juices or the tasty smoothies, on el paisano de la 23. And of course one their two main options, the torta or taco de pierna. Basically marinated pork that being cooked for a long time served on a crunchy and fresh bun or soft tortilla. A great dessert to have here is their fruit cocktail, but be aware is...
