Every so often, you stumble across a place by accident that so profoundly amazes you that it becomes a highlight of an entire trip. Such was our experience with Sakow, on a trip filled with highlights.
To describe Sakow as intimate is an understatement. The entire restaurant is a small, half-size shipping container perched on top of a convenience store. A small metal staircase takes you to the entrance, the very small kitchen to your left and some bar-style seating to your right, around the periphery of the container. By sheer luck, our party of 5 happened upon it empty, and we took up the entire place, to the point where other people came and had to either wait, get food to go, or come back another time. They did have a fold-out table that accommodated us, but it was still a bit of a squeeze.
Through no intent, we had a private dining experience, complete with some truly exceptional service from the host/waitress/(proprietor?), Pamela. She was personable, funny, but most importantly incredibly knowledgeable about their menu. Which segues into the next topic...
The food! Holy moly was everything incredible. We shared a bunch of stuff from Pamela's recommendations and wow. Everything was incredible. For those of you looking for a standard American sushi menu, this isn't it. It's more of a fusion, that leans heavily on traditional flavors from both Japanese and Mexicanan cuisine. There are some familiar favorites, but branch out. Between the 5 of us we shared 3-5 appetizers and a couple of rolls. The standouts were the fried rice, which is the best I've ever had anywhere, the Curricanes, and the Rock Shrimp. The citrus ponzu was also amazing, along with the other sauces, which Pamela curated for us expertly.
These are the diamonds in the rough you look forward to finding while on vacation, and the places you feel so good about supporting. We spent about $130 for five hungry adults. It's worth way more than what it costs.
We may or may not have gone back two nights later to get some fried...
Read moreA reviewer said this place is a diamond in the rough. I would say it’s a diamond “unmind”! The setting is a container section, the area is small with 6 seats. I’m told that it closely resembles what is found in Japan (restaurants). There are 7 in our family and we (over) ordered about 12 sushi rolls all different. ALL of them were as good or better than ANY sushi we have ever had anywhere. Pamela is the owner and she showed up shortly after we had ordered. She stayed and served and talked with us throughout our dinner. A real treat for her to share her stories. She is from Agua Calientes and speaks perfect English making the experience all the better. The next day we ate some of the left over sushi, it seemed ever better the next day. We were lucky enough to catch 2 tuna and we took it back to Pamela to make us another fresh sushi meal. It was every bit as good as the first time. If you’ve read all this then read no further and go get sushi at Sakow Sushi. Guaranteed fabulous by all 7 of us...
