We had a wonderful meal two weeks ago at La Gaviota. We showed up a little late without a reservation - somewhat close to closing time, and worried we might not be able to be seated. Instead, we were treated to the best table in the house down the stairs near the water.
The food was incredible - I had camarones al mojo de ajo and they were massive beautiful shrimp. Definitely get the plantains for dessert! Cocktails were stiff and very well made. The service was perfect - attentive but not overbearing, and despite the fact that we arrived late in the evening, they never rushed us whatsoever.
We stayed at the Thompson and ate there at Ceniza and at La Casa que Canta (Mar y Cielo) - they all had their charms but sitting at La Gaviota down by the waves watching the lights come on in town across the bay was truly special.

Read moreAbsolutely beautiful presentation as far as beach front and vistas go, and very modern and clean, a high end looking place.
Prices are typical of the area. Food is nothing special. My burger was raw in the middle and was sent back, the same paddy was used again - I know this because the bite missing was there - and the same fries were used again and were stone cold. Also, the advertised ingredients for the burger weren't put on, other than the cheese. The food took ages to arrive and we were one of only three groups there. Absolute ridiculous food experience. The starter portions are tiny. The young waiter was very polite, and everyone who handled us spoke some amount of English. My recommendation? Go there for drinks and enjoy the atmosphere, but skip the food and go down the beach to La Perla or El Manglar, or some place...

Having never been to Zihua before I was putting all my trust into reviews and photos online, and I'm so glad I chose La Gaviota for the occasion. From the moment I emailed to ask about options, Natalia was very supportive and helpful. The pricing was really reasonable for the great meal we had (we had several options we could offer our guests which was nice), service fantastic, great drinks, views unbeatable right on the water. The table arrangements were lovely and we got to play our own music. Highly recommend La Gaviota for any special events, or even just a nice meal for two. Thanks to all the staff for making that evening so...
