I am staying in the village and went in search of coffee on a Monday morning. It was the perfect opportunity to check out the beautiful beaches on that side of Yelapa. Angelina’s didn’t seem to be open but there were a few people milling around and they got me a menu that had drinks and lunch/dinner items. They told me what they had for breakfast and I asked about the price of rancheros. Instead of bringing back a price, I was brought the food- two eggs with runny whites over a hard tortilla shell with some beans and tortillas. I also got a luke warm instant coffee. While I was eating, a man approached me about purchasing a private boat tour. I asked him about the price of a ride back to the main village (maybe 3 minutes on boat or ATV) and was told 250ps. So, more than the cost of the trip from PV. My host had previously told me that it should cost around 50-100ps. I said that was too much for me and the reply was “We don’t work for free.” When the server came back I asked for a refill on the coffee. He tried to up sell me on local adventures and when i said I wasn’t interested he walked away, saying “a waste of my time, these people are too stingy,” making sure I could hear him- referring to me and two women sitting a few loungers over. He quickly brought me my bill to move me along. It looked like 205ps which didn’t seem too bad for oceanfront seating, etc. I was wrong- I paid 50ps for each cup of luke warm instant coffee and 165ps for the Rancheros ($265ps total). After tip, it was about $5 more than what it would have cost me in Washington state. The cherry on top were the gastrointestinal issues that I experienced within 30 minutes of leaving the restaurant, which has never happened to me in 10 trips to Mexico. With so many great options in the town, I’ll stick to the village side. Tip- There is a wonderful little swim and snorkel spot just to the right when you’re looking at Garcia’s. (Bring your...
Read moreMy experience here was horrible, to say the least. The cafe owner’s deceptive tactics ruined our visit to the island.
Firstly, the owner lured us into disembarking at the initial boat stop, conveniently omitting the existence of a second stop (from where the waterfalls and shops were easily accessible). This manipulation was designed to funnel tourists directly to his cafe, bypassing other attractions on the island. As a result, we missed out on the opportunity to explore and appreciate the island’s beauty fully.
Upon arriving at the cafe, the service was abysmal. It took an excruciating two hours for our food to arrive, and when we questioned the delay, the owner’s response was downright rude. Adding insult to injury, he unilaterally included a tip of 100 pesos to our bill without even informing us, which felt like a calculated move to exploit unsuspecting visitors.
The entire ordeal left us in a sour mood, ruining our plans and overshadowing our excitement to explore the island. Our primary goal was to witness the waterfalls, an endeavor made significantly more challenging due to the owner’s deceptive practices.
We unfortunately fell for this trap so I strongly advise future visitors to research and plan your visit to Yelapa otherwise you are very likely to be cheated by the locals and your stay here...
Read moreSCAM! The water taxi recommended this first restaurant on the beach as their tour guide and free wifi. Do Not be Deceived! If you are traveling, pay attention to the high number of one star reviews. The waiter was willing to ruin our trip if that's what it took to get more money out of us. He repeatedly insisted that the waterfall was 90min each way, and that if we didnt find the right spot to cross the river, it could take even longer as well as being very dangerous to cross. He insisted that we needed a horse or ATV tour to make it there in time, otherwise if we tried to make it on our own in 3.5hrs, we would likely miss the boat and be stuck there. We sadly believed we could not go to the waterfall, and instead ordered drinks. When we closed our tab the waiter had charged us significantly more for a Virgin margarita than for the menu price with alcohol, and had additional mark ups. Fortunately we did so early, and went to CocoTiki where the nice waitress told us the waterfall was only 30min away, and easy to get to, and there were no concerns about crossing the river. We had a delightful lunch & drinks at CocoTiki, & made it to the waterfall & back with...
