This place was amazing! My wife and I walked to Tomate during the early evening when the restaurants and bars on Chapultepec Ave were just getting started and the crowds hadn't yet formed. But when we got to Tomate, the place was already crowded and business was booming. Even as busy as it was, they seated us almost immediately. We watched in amazement as a huge staff (probably over 30 wait staff alone) were incredibly organized and efficient. The fact that the place was full of local people and families was a good sign that the food would be good. And it was. We ordered the Tomate Especial which I had seen recommended online. Rather than order two plates, my wife and I decided to split one large one. Big mistake! It was an huge amount of food. In fact, we could only finish maybe one fourth of the food they gave us. And the food itself was delicious. A mixture of meats, cheese and guacamole with an accompanying variety of sauces. You simply take one of the fresh tortillas and build your own taco to taste. I actually felt so bad that we didn't eat more - but a stomach can only hold so much. Rather than waste the food, we asked for a container to take with us and as we walked back to the hotel we found a homeless man and gave it to him. It was good to know the food would not be wasted. If you visit Guadalajara, I definitely recommend visiting Tomate, especially if you love tacos. P.S. The place was named Tomate Taquería, not La Tomate as the Yelp...

The hot sauces all had chile in them, but it was worth burning the mouth cause they were so good.
The limade is made in house and is delicious.
The only thing that REALLY needs improvement is coordination between waiters. Let's just say they use the regional way of service which means chaotic and waiting 20-30 minutes for a bill. One minute you think you have a waitress, and the next minute she's gone and you have no clue who is serving you now.
The main reason there is a line outside is because the waiters have no idea how to get tables out faster. So if the owner of the place reads this, give your front of house manager a smack and tell him/her this: Each waiter has a 4-table section that is their responsibility. 2-3 bussers are in charge of clearing plates and cleaning tables. Bills should be brought promptly.
I left no tip not because the food was bad (it was incredible), but because the waiters need more coordination and more guidance. They have a bad...
Read moreFood tastes great. But is also super unhealthy. If you like cheese, meat, and beer, this place is heaven. If you are on a diet, find another restaurant.
We had a pastor volcano which was delicious and enough for 8 small tacos. The quesotaco was a heavy taco within a layer of crispy cheese with more cheese inside, of course. I'm surprised as to how this is already not more popular in US and Canada. They also serve Victoria beer which is also not widely available in restaurants.
Generous refills of salsa and other condiments. Even gave us extra fresh tortillas for our leftover to-go box. Portions are huge, definitely worth the price. This place is clearly busy and we got reasonably fast friendly service. Made a mistake with Bill but fixed it with a smile.
Overall, good service, delicious albiet unhealthy food. Their 5k+ reviews with a 4.6 is...
