HAMID — Restaurant in Mérida

Restaurante Hamid was an amazing experience! The food was excellent, even my best friend who is Persian would agree! I was greeted by the owner, Hamid right at opening today and was treated with such care and hospitality I felt as I was an old friend. He explained how his father has had a restaurant for 40 years in Iran, which he grew up in and how much he was excited about this opportunity to share his culture with his neighbors. He greeted each patron who arrived after me as a friend. the energy here was so special.

The enclosed patio was lovely, and I opted to sit indoors which was decorated with a collection of beloved items that were warm and welcoming.

Upon being sat, they offered me a beverage, Dough, fermented milk/yogurt with mint that is cooling, sour, refreshing, and tasty. A small dish with fresh pitted dates and complimentary Mast, a cooling yogurt dip speckled with herbs, and possibly garlic or shallots served with Totopos excited my taste buds for what was to come.

If I see falafel, I order falafel, so I did and this was some of the best falafel of my life. Mast dip also accompanied the fresh falafel and I appreciated the cool dip with the hot falafel.

The special if the day just happened to be my FAVORITE Persian Dish, Gormeh Sabzi. With accompanying fragrant rice, the dish was rich, filling and bright! I have had this dish many times, and this brought nostalgic feelings to mind, of the times my friends mother has made me this stew, it felt like a warm hug, still welcomed though the day was hot.

I enjoyed the desert, Kuku Shirin which was a small cake like pastry soaked in syrup that was sweet, light and airy.

The prices were affordable considering the rarity of some of the ingredients and that everything is made from scratch by Hamid. I believe he sells several of the base ingredients like the yogurt as well.

Coming from Canada and living here for the past 2 years, we really missed Persian food. We were very excited to find out Merida finally has a Persian restaurant and Hamids food did not disappoint!
