Our dinner at the Chef’s Table at Grana Sabores de Origen was not only the highlight of our gastronomic experiences on our first trip to Mexico City, but also was one of best meals I’ve had in my entire life! Chef Jorge Diez Martinez, his father Jorge, his sister Rosalva, his sous chef Vivian, and their friendly and efficient mesera (whose name escapes me, sadly) welcomed us warmly into the tiny restaurant housed in a building from the 1600’s. They provided our group such a personalized and delicious experience! They made us feel like family as we sat in the beautiful kitchen enjoying watching them prepare each course and listening to Chef Jorge provide descriptions of the food and of the techniques being applied.

The starter for our meal was a softshell crab taco with seared avocado in a handmade tortilla. For the 2nd course we had a choice of either mushroom soup with baby corn cobs or huitlacoche fried in bone marrow and served over verde sauce. (Huitlacoche is a corn mushroom, also known as Mexican truffle. It is a rare fungus. I went to Mexico City with the goal of trying huitlacoche for the first time and I had it served various ways at 3 or 4 restaurants before going to Grana Sabores. Chef Jorge’s preparation was the most delicious, by far!) Our 3rd course was a beef enchilada with black mole. The beef filling was prepared like the beef in a Chiles en Nogada dish. Our 4th course was grilled oyster mushrooms served over a Pipián sauce. For dessert, we had a choice of either crème brûlée, rice pudding, or a chocolate tamale topped with caramel sauce, bacon and flor de sal. Chef Jorge put his personalized twist on each; our group of four had to try all three, of course, and all were scrumptious!

Not only will this not be the last time we visit Mexico City, but every time we go, we also will return to Grana...

We were blown away by the experience, which exceeded that of a Michelin guide restaurant we ate the day prior in CDMX. Each course brings something fresh and unexpected. You can observe the kitchen and the two chefs at work (father and son). The chef personally introduced each course at our table, answering our questions as newcomers to Mexican cuisine. He was very kind and his passion for his craft was evident. Only one other table was occupied, which made this into a more intimate experience compared to most other gourmet restaurants we have been to before. All in all, we really hope that this place gets the recognition it deserves while maintaining its...

My friend and I visited Grana last summer while we were visiting Mexico City, and it was by far one of the most thoughtfully curated and delicious meals of my entire life. It was a gastronomic delight. Jorge and his father treated us to a private dining experience where they explained every detail of the meal and chatted with us about the cultural, historical, and familial influences that go into choosing every ingredient they use and curating every dish. They were both very warm and friendly to talk to. Truly a once in a lifetime experience, and certainly our favorite meal in...
