This place has been my favorite seafood restaurant in Mexico City up until now, mainly for convenience and aesthetic, so much that every time I’ve received guests from out of town I bring them here. The truth is that you can get the same quality (if not better) seafood for 1/4 the price in other seafood restaurants outside the touristic areas, if you are more into flavor as opposed to display(try La Tumbada, el compa mochis mariscos sinaloense, Carreta Mazatleca, where you will get quality and quantity and see only locals, or better yet go to Sinaloa) Today I had a quite unpleasant experience, as I stopped by for a quick bite alone and upon asking about the portion size between two dishes the server replied in an extremely rude manner that it was written on the menu, and when I asked if he could explain it to me he replied rudely ‘I can’t give you that information’. Of which I replied ‘Well you work here, can you bring someone that can?’ He then quickly changed his attitude and offered some information, based on which I made my order. Due to the uncomfortable and rude service especially for a female eating alone, upon paying I refused to tip; the server handed me the receipt in cold silence. Although the kitchen is top notch, I feel that there is a lack of control of service quality by management. The quality of service does not level up to the quality of food and the price you will be paying, and I imagine that is also quite off putting for most looking for a well-rounded restaurant experience, especially for those used to cordial service as is expected in a restaurant, indifferent to the price...
Read moreWe were worried about not being able to get a table, but we came around 1pm with a party of 3 and were seated immediately. The staff was friendly, but we had a bit of a misunderstanding because we ended up getting an order of 6 oysters that we never asked for. I understand that since we didn’t speak very good Spanish, part of the responsibility falls on us to clarify our order. Since we never brought up oysters in the first place, it felt a little predatory that the server mentioned oysters to us and we consequently ordered them unintentionally. By the time they arrived to the table it felt wrong to refuse them. It was a bit unfortunate since they also weren’t very good oysters, and they were very pricy.
Despite that avoidable issue, all the other food we had was good. We got the tuna tostada, the aguachiles, and the seafood tower. If you’re planning on going to Contramar, I would say the Tuna Tostada there is better. The aguachiles on the other hand I enjoyed very much and would suggest getting those. The seafood tower was also fun for its novelty, though I don’t think I loved the sauce they put on it. To end it, we got the passionfruit ice cream, which was nice and refreshing. I also very much enjoyed the horchata here, so I would recommend getting...
Read moreSeriously one of my favorite meals that I had in CDMX! It’s not far from the Frida Kahlo house which is very convenient. I made a reservation but when we got there there was plenty of seating around 2pm which I don’t think is the case for other more popular locations of this restaurant. The menu is pretty big and overwhelming but we ended up getting some raw seafood and a whole fish slathered on chipotle sauce which was amazing. The raw ceviche tower was okay, lacking some flavor. The lemon margaritas and micheladas with shrimp were really good as well. Overall what I loved most was the extremely attentive staff and the vibe of the place. I love how open the restaurant is and you can see the employees cooking and prepping seafood. Great experience and can’t wait to go back on...
