Ave Maria — Restaurant in Mexico City

During my recent visit to México City, my friend and co-worker suggested we have Saturday brunch buffet at Ave María. It was definitely worth the drive across the city.

Somewhere in the middle of this vast city, we arrived at Coyoacán. It's like an oasis in the middle of the desert.

Ave María sits alongside a beautiful park area with other restaurants. It has a lovely outdoor seating area in front of the restaurant. The service was exceptional, and the variety of food prepared was unbelievable. The hostess walked us through the inside, then around the outdoor buffet area, and back to the front. We chose to sit outside to enjoy the beautiful weather which allowed us to watch the people wandering through the park.

Any and everything you could imagine from true Méxican cuisine, they had on the buffet. Trust me, the authentic Méxican cuisine is nothing like Tex-Mex, it's immeasurably different and satisfying.

Some of my favorites were the "Caldo de Camarón," enormous and delicious tamales, al pastor tacos shaved directly from the spit when ordered, fresh fruits, and freshly squeezed juices.

Great Location, Disappointing Food

This restaurant is located in a beautiful spot with a view of Coyoacán Park — a perfect place to spend some time in a cozy atmosphere. The menu is extensive, with a wide selection of dishes and desserts. The staff were friendly, smiling, and working hard despite the full house. We went on a rainy day, and even though the restaurant was packed, the team did their best — huge credit to them!

Unfortunately, I can’t say the same about the food. I ordered shrimp pasta and apple strudel — both were completely tasteless. I honestly didn’t think it was possible to make these dishes so bland.

Also, my dessert was served on a wet plate that smelled of bleach — probably due to the rush and lack of clean dishes. That really ruined the experience. I couldn’t finish either my main course or dessert.

All three stars I’m giving are purely for the excellent service and the lovely location. Maybe it’s worth coming for a cup of coffee, but I wouldn’t recommend it for...

Lamentablemente toca poner esta calificación. Fuimos después de casarnos hace 1 año y por eso decidimos regresar en nuestro primer aniversario este año y tuvimos más de 3 situaciones que nos dejaron súper mal sabor de boca y en un día tan especial para nosotros. Pedimos un platillo de temporada, molotes, que viene en el menú que trae crema, queso y rellenos de diferentes hongos y vegetales. Hicimos la aclaración que sin crema ni queso porque somos veganos, acto seguido venían rellenos de queso, al comentarle a la mesera esto y mostrarle, nos comentó que no era queso cuando era claro que lo era y al mostrarle otro de los molotes aceptó que traía, recalco, no viene especificado en la carta que también vienen rellenos de queso. La mesera comenta que nos los cambia y regresa para decirnos que tardarán mucho, con una ligera insistencia para no pedirlos nuevamente y decidimos esperar por el platillo corregido. Llegan nuestros platos fuertes y de la hamburguesa (pedida de la parte del menú que viene indicado como vegano) cae un chapulín enorme, de verdad no hay lógica en que en un restaurante que tiene apartado vegano no sepan del cuidado que deben tener en este tipo de platillos y que después de regresar un plato con queso, ahora aparezca esto!!! Le comentamos a la mesera y su respuesta fue, bueno, es un insecto 🥴🤦‍♀️ o sea, aunque no fuera este el caso, entonces me tengo que aguantar si trae un bicho si me diera asco?! Y bueno más allá de eso, esa no es una respuesta que se debe dar a un cliente. Nos dijeron que la cambiaban pero la verdad no quisimos que se tirara a la basura comida y aparte que fueran a esconderle algo más al platillo porque lamentablemente por como fueron las cosas se vio totalmente intencional que viniera un chapulín en nuestro platillo. Por último, el gerente al comentarle sí se disculpó y dijo que lo iba a revisar y nos trajo una tarjeta de descuento, pero después de pensarlo era para que NO nos hubiera cobrado la hamburguesa y hasta bebidas de cortesía o algo! Un descuento para que regreses y gastes más, no me parece que realmente sea una acción para quedar bien con el cliente y resarcir la mala experiencia. Lamentablemente parece que te tienes que poner súper pesado para que se pongan las pilas yo creo, porque por las buenas solo sales con esa tarjeta y una pésima experiencia, arruinando nuestro momento.
