The parish church of San Juan Bautista is located at the edge of the Plaza Hidalgo in Coyoacán. It is a wonderful example of Mexican colonial baroque with richly decorated, colorful interior that's typical of Mexico City churches. The entry is free, but please be respectful as it is a working church and most people within are actually praying. What I found the most interesting about this church was the engineering. This church has no isles or columns inside, and the vault spans the entire width of the nave which is pretty unusual.

Die Parroquia San Juan Bautista in Coyoacan ist zweifellos ein architektonisches Juwel, das einen Besuch wert ist. Ihre Geschichte reicht bis ins 15. Jahrhundert zurück, und das spiegelt sich sowohl in ihrer Schönheit als auch in ihrem kulturellen Erbe wider. Beim Betreten dieser Kirche fällt sofort die auffallende Schlichtheit und Schönheit des Innenraums auf. Die vielen Säulen, die sich majestätisch nach oben erstrecken, sind mit drei Engeln in einem lebendigen Blau verziert, ein Detail, das die Besucher verzaubert. Gold- und Glasfenster fangen das einfallende Licht ein und tauchen den Raum in eine mystische Atmosphäre. Es ist jedoch bedauerlich, dass das Äußere der Kirche nicht den gleichen Glanz widerspiegelt. Es ist offensichtlich, dass die Jahre ihre Spuren hinterlassen haben, und die Fassade zeigt Zeichen von Verschleiß und Vernachlässigung. Dennoch sollte man sich nicht von diesem ersten Eindruck abschrecken lassen, denn das Innere dieser Kirche ist ein wahres Meisterwerk der Architektur und des Glaubens. Die Tatsache, dass die Parroquia San Juan Bautista zu den drei ältesten Kirchen Mexikos gehört, macht sie zu einem wichtigen kulturellen Erbe. Die getrennten Gärten fügen noch eine weitere Dimension hinzu, die Besucher einlädt, die Geschichte und Spiritualität dieses Ortes zu erkunden. Für mich persönlich ist die Parroquia San Juan Bautista einer meiner Favoriten in Mexiko-Stadt und ein zusätzlicher Anreiz, den charmanten Stadtteil Coyoacan zu besuchen. Ich empfehle diesen Ort jedem, der nach einer bedeutenden und inspirierenden Erfahrung sucht.

Very interesting church, a fine example of the early New Spain colonial architecture, quite austere in its original form but later embellished (particularly the mosaics inlaid domes) by Franciscan friars to whom Hernán Cortés granted the land, shortly after the Conquista, in the early XVIth century. The gallery offers fine inlaid and intricately carved ceilings (do your homework and search for the meanings and symbols of the various parts of the ceiling) and beautiful garden in its courtyard.

One of the oldest churches in the hemisphere, construction started only 8 years after Hernan Cortes conquered Tenochtitlan. Interior is very interesting. It’s a working church so many people go worship inside. Many Mexicans are devout and request for saints to intercede for them. When God grants a miracle, requested through a saint, the devout person will leave a small token or medal hanging on the wall next to the interceding saint. Worth a visit.

Beautiful old monestary that was one of the first established in Mexico City when the Spaniards first arrived in the area. The church is beautiful with huge ceilings that echo God's good word to it's followers; and the Monestary which houses real life monks offers a scenic, tranquil respite from the hustle and bustle of Coyocan's main square.
