My husband and I really enjoyed our dinner at Henshin. We opted for the Premium Omakase (they also have regular a la carte items). The food was amazing. Every piece of sushi that we ate was fresh and flavorful. The pacing of the courses was spot on. We were totally full after the meal.
Some highlights for me include the futomaki roll that was loaded with two or three different fish and a drizzle of butter (yes, butter!) that wonderfully complemented the fish. The wagyu and unagi nigiri were also flavorful. The locally caught red snapper carpaccio on the seaweed and cucumber salad was also delicious.
All the nigiri were well composed with some nice flavor surprises that did not overwhelm the natural flavors of the fish. The rice was perfectly cooked and seasoned. Head Chef Dani (who served us) knows what he's doing. When you eat a well flavored nigiri that doesn't need any soy sauce, you know you're in good hands.
The staff was friendly and knew their fish, much of which is caught in local waters. Service was attentive and pleasant. The little touches were thoughtful and there was a lot of attention to detail: the ceramic dishware was of high quality, the plating was simple and beautiful, the orchestration amongst the staff and the servers was spot on. They even changed out our chopsticks between the raw and cooked courses.
The restaurant itself had a classy and unfussy decor. There were about 3-4 tables indoors and a few more outdoors in the courtyard for larger parties. You can sit at the chef's counter as well. We had a nice romantic dinner at a table for two. The restaurant was empty when we arrived at 6 pm for our reservation (off season and it was early). Even if the restaurant was packed it would still feel intimate. The restaurant is located in the quieter northern part of Sayulita, away from the very touristy (and louder and busier) part of town.
The food is solid. I would go back again. Thank you to the team for a...
Read moreWe ate here on our last night in Sayulita. We have been to Sayulita multiple times, but had never eaten at Henshin. We did the 4 course Omakase style dinner with a couple bottles of wine. The restaurant ambiance was relaxing and the food was 5 stars (especially the fish roll). The big problem was the service! Our courses came out of order, which was not a big deal, except our waitress had to ask us if we had the nigiri yet. When we did get the nigiri, we only got 5 pieces each instead of the 6 pieces listed. She dropped of the plates, but didn’t tell us the types of fish that we were served. After our first bottle of wine (split between 4), we had to chase our waitress down to ask for more wine, and then we had to remind her again when she forgot. We did finally get our, not so chilled, white wine. This place is expensive compared to other Sayulita restaurants - it is more in line with a nice US restaurant dinner bill. At that price, we expect better service. We will be back to Sayulita, but would not go...
Read moreWe had a wonderful dinner here on our last night in Sayulita. We are from Seattle and are accustomed to great sushi; the food here was wonderful. The chef came out to greet us and explain the Omakase service, asked if there were any allergies, etc.
What to expect: starter dish (ours was a cucumber seaweed salad with local fish) 7 piece nigiri (local fish, tuna, lobster) (the toro!!! 😍) 1 large roll to share
We also ordered two Sapporo's and shared ginger ice cream.
What to know: $$$$ for Sayulita. Cash only; we paid in pesos but they had a sign for their US dollar exchange rate so we could have paid in dollars. For the meal listed above it was just over 2000 pesos before the tip. What we would expect to pay at a nice sushi restaurant in a metro area, but others may be surprised. Reservations are required. I reserved using the chat feature in this Google listing and they responded within an hour. Staff that we worked with spoke Spanish and English.
We hope to return the next time we are...
