Looking to waste your time and money? Well Sur38 is the place for you!
For a highly rated restaurant it is not deserving of its 4.9 stars. I topically don’t write negative reviews as I don’t like to make bitter comments, but get this, 2 hours and 30 minutes! Now what is 2 hours and 30 minutes, that is the amount of time me and my family spent sitting and waiting for our food and drinks. While we had ordered 2 appetizers, 3 drinks for our starting and things went decently well. Tapas were nothing to brag about despite having a small menu, and quite frankly just about flavorless as salt and pepper. Now moving on to the longest part of my family’s evening that was spent sitting and waiting on our main meals, we sat for about 1 hour waiting on our food which was quite strange for even the town as other restaurants take at most 30 minutes. Once again the food was nothing special and nothing to comment about, we decided that it would only be fair to order dessert so we could get the full experience and see if there was something that gave the restaurant its 4.9 stars. We were sorely mistaken to have ordered dessert and more drinks, because we sat for 40 minutes waiting on 1 bottle of water and 1 espresso martini that never came. Well the rest of our time the remaining 1 hour was spent as my patience started to run thin with no interaction with our waiter for 50 minutes and ultimately no dessert. We asked for our check and left without our desserts and drinks. And all the manager could do was argue with us despite making only eye contact with our table, what a fantastic experience we had!
Once again I am not a fan of writing bad reviews as they can be overwhelming and negative. But for once I think that negativity has a place in a review section as the place has a 4.9 stars!? So, bottom line is that if you want okay food and terrible service this is the place to be. Me and my family will not be wasting any more time at that restaurant ever again. Save your money for Díaz and...
Read moreour server was lovely and the atmosphere was great for our table outside in the evening. however, we were left pretty shocked at the food quality in relation to the consistent 5 star raving reviews of this place. while our dishes weren’t ‘bad’ by any means, they were incredibly dull and forgettable, especially for the price. the tuna was good, but the other dishes were not enjoyable and pretty bland. I have celiac and am very used to not being able to fully enjoy restaurants or settling for mediocre options - but, we were suggested to have the pulpo dish served the same as it was described on the menu, just over lettuce instead of potatoes (because of fryer contact) and happily took up the offer - we ended up with whatever salad they offer (plain romaine lettuce and some small veggies) on the menu w a few pieces of plain octopus scattered over top. It was extremely bland. (but we were fine enough with it since we had already sat down and ordered multiple dishes/were hungry and excited for such a glowingly reviewed restaurant) - that was until realizing they charged us the full price of the original dish for some plain lettuce and octopus. I have never left a review anywhere and I work in the restaurant industry, so I heavily debated on writing this but I truly cannot understand why every review is so glowing when in fact, this is an extremely mid restaurant, charging very high prices for a regrettable meal. our other dishes, (no dietary changes made) were ok, at BEST.
(our server was lovely, and we appreciate him greatly and did not feel the need to bring up the blandness of the food as it seems like something that cannot be fixed by the staff. we paid/tipped happily and left. I only felt this review should be left for those browsing the glowing reviews as a warning. maybe it was an off day? or maybe they’re better for brunch?...
Read moreWe were asked to leave a review; I never do, but here goes. We visited for dinner.
The restaurant is beautiful, lovely chilled out atmosphere, good tunes, relaxed yet professional and friendly service.
Rest assured the following comments are meant as constructive; it really is a nice place to go (and the only joint we've eaten at in Sayulita with air con; a massive plus in the heat!)
Ordering drinks was a bit odd- the menu only has a wine list and a few cocktails (which were delicious). Our seven year old was catered for with a raspberry lemonade - more options were available, just not on the menu.
Food was good and tasty, but the offering feels like it lacks cohesion - Mexican style tapas for staters, a couple of pastas, a burger and meatballs the choice of only a few mains. Two of the crostini style starters we had featured baguette that had been fully baked until crisp, and with no olive oil. Personally I like them grilled and with a bit of chew, as served in Spain or Italy.
It kind of feels like eating in a place that wants (in vibe and style) to set itself apart from the norm for the area, but also wants/needs to cater for the mass market as it's slightly away from the centre with the footfall.
Great place, lovely people. Once again, apologies for the...
