We decided to give La Casona Steakhouse & Seafood Grill a try during our stay (we’re not doing all-inclusive). They had a special featuring a 35 oz Tomahawk Steak that came with salad, soup, two sides, and dessert.
Our server, Mauricio, was fantastic and made the experience enjoyable. Here’s a breakdown of what we tried:
Salads
Watermelon Salad (Orange & Ginger Sauce, Feta Cheese, Walnuts, Cucumber, Purslane) • My wife loved this one. It wasn’t my favorite, but it was well-prepared, with an excellent presentation.
Berry Salad (Gorgonzola Cheese, Spinach, Balsamic Reduction, Caramelized Nuts) • I really enjoyed this! It was balanced, flavorful, and beautifully presented.
Soups
Clam Chowder (Vegetables, Bacon, Butter) • Incredibly rich and creamy, but it lacked seasoning and texture. It felt flat overall.
Meat Juices Soup (Onion, Steak, Cilantro, Serrano Pepper, Lime, Green Sauce, Beans) • This was the standout dish for me. The flavors were bold, with delicious steak pieces. However, if you’re not a fan of cooked cilantro, it might not be your thing.
Sides
Homemade Mashed Potato Purée • These were okay—definitely more like regular mashed potatoes than a purée. Not bad, but not outstanding either.
Sautéed Mushrooms • The flavor here was a bit off and didn’t stand out.
Tomahawk Steak (35 oz)
The tableside presentation for the steak was impressive and felt very upscale. Unfortunately, the execution fell short. We ordered it medium, but it came out quite rare. While they adjusted it upon request, the steak itself lacked tenderness and flavor. It may have been a combination of the quality and preparation, but it wasn’t as memorable as I’d hoped.
We chose La Casona to compare it to Bocados Steakhouse at Garza Blanca. Here’s my takeaway after dining once at each: • Bocados Steakhouse: The quality of food was far superior. While their presentation could use some polish, the service was excellent, and the atmosphere was stunning. • La Casona: The presentation and service here were exceptional, but the food didn’t match up. Additionally, the overall vibe of the restaurant felt bland, almost like dining in a generic conference room.
Overall, La Casona didn’t quite meet the standard set by Bocados. It was a good experience, but not one I’d...
Read moreI had a great time here. The steak wasn't the high point but other things made up for that.
The tuna carpaccio and beef tartare were the highlights of the appetizer round, along with the clam chowder. All super flavorful! The tomato with balsamic was underwhelming, the tomato was pretty bland variety and the balsamic had a strange flavor. The pork belly with watercress was also not great. Way too fatty (like literally no actual meat on our piece). The sauce was amazing and the other things in the bowl like the watercress and lentils were delicious.
For main courses two of us had ribeye and the third had short rib. The short rib was delicious! Tender, juicy, yummy braising sauce. The ribeye was a bit meh. Not bad but I asked for rare, came out more medium rare. Slightly under seasoned. And just not very tender. Not aged or handled quite right.
Dessert made up for anything else as we had three all fantastic! The carrot cake was awesome and beautiful, the chocolate mousse was rich and had great texture contast with it's cereal crunch, and the passion fruit creme brulee was my favorite dessert of all three restaurants so far. Yummers!!
Of all the restaurants at Villa del Palmar this has been the most subdued atmosphere so far. At Zama and Hiroshi our servers were so friendly and fun, here they were pretty reserved. It's not bad, just a...

I came here again this year again following last year visit and it lost a bit for me but it's still worth coming back. If it loses more on my next visit, "Who knows when" I may need to change my star rating.
I still enjoyed my Steak, made just right for me. The side dishes were good but better back in 2020. Original review in 2020.
This restaurant location is another hit at the Villa Del Palmar resort. Steak are made to protection. Also not to mention the sides to complete your dining experience more delightful. The views are nicer if you ask to be seated there, on my first visit it had rained a bit just before we entered. So the view looked just right to take an cloudy evening photo shot. You can see the view I just mentioned from one of my pictures posted.
The staff is very friendly and attentive to provide help if and they are called about. I came to this restaurant on two occasions for my stay.
This restaurant ranks second for me. My favorite was the Sushi place. Still in all, I would recommend them and even...
