I’ve visited this restaurant and beach club numerous times and the experience never gets old. It’s location can’t be beat and the menu is extensive. We celebrated my sons 7th birthday here by special request as he loves the beach and more specifically THIS BEACH. And we brought family visiting us here for Christmas Eve and we came back Christmas Day. We even took family pictures on the beach. It wasn’t super crowded. Come by 12 and you’ll find a free spot. You can eat at the restaurant table or rent a palapa, very reasonable price in comparison to Tulum.
Parking. It took me way too long to realize parking was free and I could avoid the tourist vendors and pay by the hour parking near Turtle Bay.
Restaurant. Decent food and drinks. Nothing to write home about. My favorite are the nachos with pineapples. Make sure they don’t burn the cheese. I’ve had quite a few items and only the nachos move me. This is partial reason for the 4 stars.
Beach Club. Sometimes they take reservations. Sometimes they don’t and they swear they don’t. They state it’s first come first serve but after dropping by and pressing them a few times asking different people and of course emailing Akumal Caribe Hotel, we got a reservation for two days in a row. The beach club includes an exclusive spot at $450 pesos for a palapa and two chairs. Add’l chairs are $150 pesos each. I would assume service would be available but they don’t pay you any attention in the beach club area. I’ve had to go to get a server to order or follow up on an order. My last visit it took 60 minutes to get an order of wings. And their response was sometimes the kitchen gets backed up. Sir it’s 4:00 pm and the crowd is gone, stop it and admit you forgot to place our order. But nope. I appreciate the setting. It’s beautiful. Relaxing. Not crowded at all. Social distancing is in full effect even when the beach is busy. This is the other reason for the 4 stars.
Swim with the turtles. Many state you can swim and see the turtles on your own with snorkeling gear if you go down to Secrets and swim out. Gear encouraged. We had our own. All we saw were different colored fish which were beautiful. But you can choose to pay if you want or try it out with your own gear. The turtles are more prevalent during the summer and early fall.
Akumal is hands down my favorite beach. Xpu is number 2. I will always visit this place and grab something from Loh Ha.

Read moreThe view is sooooo lovely I almost didn't mind the mediocre food. The palm trees, the water, the chill vibe, it looked like paradise. So many boats and "orange bobbers" (snorkelers lol) to watch while we ate.
To find this place, turn right at the OXXO to get "free" parking. You pay 200 pesos a person to be applied to to your food bill. You must pay for either food or the deposit at the restaurant when you arrive. Yes they hunted us down to make us pay as we were not ready to eat yet. Swim first? Pay a deposit. Eat first? Buy food, no deposit needed. We were told we could order our food, swim and then eat when it was ready but we couldn't leave our belongings at the table after we ate... maybe if we kept ordering drinks... I don't know.
As a vegetarian we don't often find too many options, but these guys had a number to choose from. I was super excited and was really looking forward to lunch!! I ordered the Vegetarian Fajitas and husband had the Vegan burger.
Fajitas get a 5/10. Half the serving of veggies was actually over grilled plantain. I thought, hmmm, that is interesting and I was excited to try the combo of veggies, plantain and even pineappple... but the plantain was simply a mushy addition to my fajitas. I left all of it off to the side. Husband pulled out 7 very thin strips of peppers hoping they were not as overcooked as the zucchini and carrots... they were. The guac, rice and the beans were great. And the 2 tortilla chips that came as "garnish" were light and crispy.
Husband ordered the vegan burger. Basically it was quinoa, made very mushy, with chickpeas shaped in a round patty with grill marks. It was not a burger other than they put it on a bun with lettuce and tomato. It was a quinoa mash at the most. He REALLY enjoyed the fries so. He gave his meal a 5/10. It was a good serving size so it made him happy.
Luis was a wonderful server. He was patient with my Spanish and even helped me with a couple of words.
We went once, we won't do it again. Maybe the other food options would be better I really had hopes for a good fajita in a...
Read moreI had a really bad meal there. The staff was not exceptional. Sure the view is nice but I'm not reviewing akumal beach but the restaurant. Service took forever and I was starving. I ordered a piña colada without alcohol and it was so small that i drank it in 2 sips.I ordered the vegetarian fajita plate since I'm vegetarian and it was gross! I had a plate with less than a cup of vegetables that were uncooked raw potatoes, zucchini with a few plantains and onion. Fajitas are usually charred and yummy. These veggies had no seasoning, no salt. I had 3 tortillas that were not warm, 2 tablespoon of dried rice, 1/4 cup of cold beans that tasted like they came out of a 99 cent can and 1/2 cup of guacamole that was the only decent thing on my plate. I ate everything cuz I was starving . I left a 20%tip even though I told the waiter upfront the food tasted bland. He stood there waiting for more tip money? On top of that I was charged the full price of an alcoholic drink even though it contained no alcohol and was worth only a fraction of what I payed. I was still so hungry when I left...I ended up eating veggie quesadillas at a street stall that tasted 10 times better than the disaster they had served me! Others seemed to have ordered good plates...perhaps I chose wrong. In any case I won't be back again to avoid...
