Sumptuori — Restaurant in Quintana Roo

First, the good: we got a table outside. It was an absolutely lovely spot, great for a romantic date or if you want to spend time with your family. Even though we were far from the bustle of the rest of the patrons, our waiter, Enrique, was very attentive and our glasses were never empty, we enjoyed the experience. I have a lot of allergies and he made sure I felt safe eating the food.

The bad: first, a disclaimer, I'm not into teppanyaki, so if you like that the restaurant is probably going to be great for you, I'm speaking to the rest of the menu: this isn't Japanese food. I was really curious about how Japanese food is done in Mexico, the food tasted like whoever wrote the menu had never tried Japanese food before, or maybe didn't like it? They offer sushi (hand rolls, nigiri, and sashimi) which require high quality fish and the quality is not there. Maybe there was something redeeming on the menu, but I didn't find it. They had sake, but you had to buy a large bottle and I don't drink that much, so I passed on it, there was no house sake available.

The ugly: I come from the land of the sushirito, California, and California rolls do not have cream cheese. That's a variation of the Philadelphia roll. Do not besmirch the California roll this way.

I have been to restaurants back home that gave me completely bland food because I was allergic to something and that may have happened here, but the other themed restaurants I have tried here have not...

WORST DINNER OF THE TRIP! Booked a regular table and was given an extremely rude waiter named Ricardo. He made it seem like we had no idea what we were doing and made everything uncomfortable for our party. After that, we were served our appetizers. The soup and apps were pretty good but then came the awful salad course. My sister ordered the octopus salad without octopus but he were served with octopus. My octopus salad had hair on it which was not from our party and was absolutely disgusting. We then were served our sushi which was warm and almost vomit worthy. So far extremely disappointing and truly gross. I then received my chicken yaki soba which wasn’t awful but still not so good. We left soon after due to the sheer lack of quality and good service from the resturant. I wouldn’t return to this resturant ever again. So...

Sumptuori is a teppanyaki à la carte restaurant inside Grand Palladium Kantenah Resort in Riviera Maya, Mexico. It's a full on cook show dining experience and it gets booked up quickly so try booking it earlier during your stay at the resort if you can. The group at our table was on the quieter side and it definitely makes a difference if you have a livelier/energetic group at your table. We were served sushi, teppanyaki style fried rice, assorted veggies and mixed proteins. You have a few dessert options to choose from and we opted for the fried ice cream and chocolate cake with matcha ice cream. I preferred the latter.
