A culinary disaster and a service tragedy. Silk Road has consistently been one of the most respected institutions in Mongolia for about 2 decades and I wanted to give it a new look and see if it was worth the hype. It is most certainly not:
Caesar Salad had no protein, a separate receptacle for the sauce (am I supposed to dip the lettuce in the sauce?), and, most egregiously, just storebought toast that they didn’t even bother to dehydrate and roast properly. A scam. Steaks. I bought the lamb and ribeye with both ordered to medium rare. The lamb came dangerously close to well done and the ribeye was uneven throughout. Tons of sautéed vegetables, sauces, risotto and arugula were thrown onto the plate haphazardly with the care of a raging animal. Tough, chewy, overdone, awful steaks. Chocolate cheesecake. Frozen to the point that a spoonful would require actual strength to separate a bite from the cake. Overly sweet.
Service was cold and transactional, ambience was unremarkable. Maybe Silk Road used to be great but as it is right now, it’s a waste of both time and money.

Our food came out yummy. The pasta, fish and soup all tasted excellent. The view from the windows of the monastery is also very nice. I especially enjoyed my desert cake.
The place can g egg crowded and slow down the service, but overall we had a great experience here. Definitely a recommended stop...

Had the sirloin steak.
PROS: overall great value for the price point. Service was friendly.
CONS: Steak was slightly hard, and vegetables were slightly undercooked. Wine pour was a bit stingy (glass quantity not poured to normal restaurant or bar standards)
