The Sqala, often called La Sqala, in Casablanca is a charming and beautifully designed restaurant that captures the essence of traditional Moroccan architecture and ambiance. Nestled in a lush garden setting near the city’s old medina, The Sqala feels like an oasis away from the bustling streets, making it an ideal spot for a peaceful meal, especially breakfast. One of the standout features of The Sqala is its picturesque garden, complete with colorful tiles, fountains, and vibrant greenery that create a serene, almost magical environment. The layout combines shaded seating with sunny spots, so you can choose your perfect breakfast spot. It’s easy to lose yourself in the details of the decor, which brings Moroccan culture and elegance together in an inviting and warm space. The breakfast menu offers a delightful selection of traditional Moroccan dishes and pastries, as well as classic international options. Freshly baked bread, honey-drizzled msemen, and rich Moroccan mint tea are favorites here, providing an authentic taste of Morocco’s culinary heritage. With its laid-back yet refined atmosphere, The Sqala is ideal not just for breakfast but also for lunch, afternoon tea, or a leisurely dinner. The service is known to be friendly and attentive, adding to the welcoming vibe of the place. Popular with both locals and tourists, The Sqala provides a perfect blend of Moroccan culture, delicious food, and tranquil beauty, making it one of Casablanca’s hidden gems for a memorable dining experience.

La Sqala is hands down one of the best places I visited during my trip to Morocco, and it absolutely has to be one of the highlights of the journey. From the food to the atmosphere, everything about this place is incredible! Their breakfast platter is a must-try, with every single item tasting absolutely perfect. The msemen, or as people from south asia would call them, “Moroccan parathas,” were the star of the meal for me. This place made me fall in love with msemen—it was soft, flaky, and paired wonderfully with the dips and spreads. Their omelette was equally amazing, with a flavor that left a lasting impression. But it’s not just the food that makes La Sqala special. The whole place has a vibe that’s uniquely Moroccan, with traditional music and live singers adding so much charm. The natural ambiance, from the lush greenery to the carefully designed seating, is simply stunning. The lively yet relaxing atmosphere makes it the perfect spot to soak in the local culture while enjoying an unforgettable meal. If you’re in Casablanca, visiting La Sqala is non-negotiable. Whether for the food, the music, or just the incredible energy, it’s an experience you don’t want to miss!

Beware hyping up a place so much in your head that you could end up being rather disappointed! Sqala is one of the famous and recommended restaurants of Casablanca. However, my experience was disappointing - and I feel this is mostly because of the staff. Firstly, there is a clear discrimination of service if you're non-Arab. We were made to wait a very long time before anyone came to our table despite the table next to us getting all the attention (with Arabic guests) even though they were seated after us. The server had no smile and answered my questions condescendingly. I asked for tagine and I was told they were out of tagine (which I found very odd). I ordered whatever "was available" and wasn't very pleased. When I brought this up to the manager, he himself was shocked and said they would be able to serve me the exact tagine I wanted rightaway. I politely delcined the offer as we had already eaten by then but he insisted and suggested it would be on the house. We decided to give the restaurant a second chance and said we'd take one to-go. Sure enough, the dish I came to the restaurant for was served magically. As we were about to leave, the same server demanded payment for the dish that was supposed to be on the house and one that the manager had insisted!! At this point, I was shocked. The manager intervened again and to his credit, he honored the expectations. Anyway, I hope if you do decide to go to this beautifully designed restaurant with a nice ambience, you have a much better experience than I did. The overall experience ruined whatever enjoyment we had from the food. As I mentioned, the staff needs to be more hospitable and less discriminatory. If you're sure about visiting, I'd recommend making a reservation. I, personally, preferred the less fancy eateries around Casablanca that had excellent taste and very warm service.

Having been here three times, twice in 2022 and once in 2023, I can say this is an odd place. The setting is wonderful: the cannons, the fort-style wall, the arched entrances, the majlis-style rooms, and the outdoor seating in a lovely courtyard-style patio surrounded by old walls. This aspect of the restaurant - the setting and decor - are excellent, hence my giving it 5 stars for atmosphere. However, I only gave 3 stars for service. Not because the servers are bad; on the contrary, they are good, once you get their attention. The problem is there just never seems to be enough of them. The worst thing about this restaurant, unfortunately, is the food. I have had vegetable tajine here three times and each time it has looked spectacular but was not just bland but was totally devoid of any flavour whatsoever. The accompanying harissa was of the readymade variety out of a bottle, and was not spicy. The atay (Moroccan tea) with mint was also tasteless and is easily the worst tea I have ever had in Morocco. They must put a lot of effort into making their tea so tasteless. The only good thing was the bread, but you can buy that anywhere in Morocco. Despite the tasteless food, however, this restaurant is most certainly not cheap! Indeed, you will pay 5-10 times more here than at any comparable restaurant. I guess people pay for the ambience and the Arabian Nights atmosphere. My fear, though, is that tourists sample Moroccan food here and come to the conclusion that the cuisine in the country is tasteless, when of course that is not the case! Another shortcoming of this restaurant, especially since they seem to want to attract foreign tourists, is that they do not have an alcohol licence so diners are not able to enjoy a glass of wine or beer with their meal.

I just want to share my a small experience with you. I went to this place with my friend summer time to have a lunch. At arrival place we have found a small counter and receptionist little girl, I have asked her if we can come in to have a lunch and asked me if we have reservation but unfortunately not had it and I have asked if we can come in to have an idea about the place and menu and we may return back another day but unfortunately, she told me it is not allowed which disappointed and frustrated me and my friend and when I have asked why she left us us standing at the small counter. One silly man ( dark skin) I have asked him are you working here, he said I'm the manager here so I have told him Infront of you heard the conversation and behaviour from your colleague but you just kept watching without professional action or explanation to us. The shock answer from this manager was I'm not involved. Immediately I have left and understood I and my friend are in wrong place. I highly Highly not recommend this place and to be aware of something goes wrong nobody will help you there at all. Poor customer service poor quality are both connected to each other and there is suspicious issue with food or price that they tried to hide as I understood they prefer ritch tourists.

Didn’t realise until afterwards that this place is on a list of the best restaurants in Casablanca. It shouldn’t be on that list. Yes the decor is nice but I’ve not come to admire it, I come for the food. The restaurant is located next to the slum market, so it’s slightly better to enter the restaurant from the port side. Service speed was okay, but the service itself can be improved. Too many people smoking, which I didn’t like. Popular with tourists, they even bring their suitcases which is something I’ve never seen at a restaurant. Good that menu is available in English. Too many flies, was worried about the hygiene. Food wise, the goat cheese salad was inedible. Not sure what it was but I couldn’t eat it, surprisingly since it’s one of my favourite salads, so I asked waiter to take it away (they didn’t charge me for it, thankfully). No couscous left on the menu by 6pm, disappointing. Beef tagine was average. Moroccan tea was poor quality. Milk pastilla was okay, nothing exciting. Overall this is a very average restaurant with good prices. Will not be back
