Cherry Man Restaurant — Restaurant in Yangon

Overpriced and possibly a scam for tourist...

We went to try this place out and when seated we were handed English menus with no prices, which isn’t too uncommon in Myanmar. BUT when we inquired about prices we were told half the menu (i.e. curries, etc) started at 9,500 kyat!!! We asked again to make sure we heard him correctly. And yes, he did not stutter. We politely exited upon hearing this and felt as though the owner could have arbitrarily raised the prices on us based on our race. After reading other reviews and Lonely Planet, he has either tripled his prices or there’s a scam going on here. I'd give it zero stars if I could. Awful food, and they completely rip you off. Charged me five times what they'd charge their local customers (10,000 kyat for one small piece of chicken?). I'd be charged less at the Sedona Five Star hotel and the food would be better. Chicken was badly cooked. Experience was terrible. I've had so many fantastic and cheap meals here in Yangon, as well as some great luxury meals. No one has ever ripped me off before, people have been so honest here and charged local prices. This is the most dishonest experience in the city. And the toilet was absolutely foul, I felt like making myself vomit after seeing it and having to eat. The toilet door doesn't close either....

Brilliant place for indian-like food. Great parotha. Outside seating is very enjoyable. Nice staff. Big plate of tandori chicken and big plate of curried lamb with fried onions plus three parothas for 19k, which was plenty for 2. You can order beer from nearby shops. I've been coming back over the last couple of years as it's one of my favourite place in Yangon. Don't miss it. ps: After checking with local friends I doubt they overcharge foreigners. It's a famous place and a local institution here. Maybe you can find similar food around for cheaper but IMO it's definitely worth paying the price for...
