Burma Bistro - a restaurant nestled in a hidden enclave off a busy road -- you'd walk by and never realize that you just passed by one of the most exciting restaurants in the new wave of Burmese and Chinese fusion cuisine.
The restaurant sits above all the chaotic movements on the floor below and once go through a dark tunnel and up some well-traveled stairs, you are transported to another world full of exquisite details, high quality foods and free wifi.
I've been here countless times and every time I visit, I'm not disappointed. Their interpretation of tea leaf salad is modern and well balanced between salty, sweet and acidic. Yes, this one has some sweetness to it. It is more different and unique from most of the other tea leaf salads that I've ordered throughout this country. Just tasting this dish itself is worth visiting for.
The banana blossom salad is also fresh and appetizing and comes presented in the outer layer of the banana blossom - it scores high in taste and in presentation. On to the main courses - the chicken curry is a favorite and the Kemarat Grilled Chicken - full of flavor, moist and succulent. Steamed seabass is well executed. Really, you can't go wrong but be mindful of spices and if you cannot take spicy foods, be sure to bring this up beforehand.
The unique ambiance - by itself nestled in a historic building - is well decorated and evokes of the rich cultural Myanmar heritage. The staff are quick to be helpful and service is consistently high every time we've visited. We've never been disappointed.
Finally, this is a space that is a favorite among locals, expats and far-away travelers. A unique culinary destination that embraces the cultural mosaic of old Burmese tradition while boldly looking forward. It is, perhaps a glimpse into Myanmar's promising future, as this country continues its path forward. Well done to the founder & management team. Looking forward to the next...
Read moreOverrated. We were misled by the positive reviews and went there with a friend who is visiting Myanmar for a first time. Outdoors area has all the problems like mosquitoes, without a view - walls are too high. Portions are tiny, for example curries come in a small bowl with food barely covering the bottom. Menu prices may look ok, but considering the amount of food it is ridiculously overpriced. Tea leaf salad was brought with a slice of lime, chilies, garlic and dried prawns on the side. I'm not against DIY, but whole chilies and a garlic clove plus no knives at the table? My biggest problem was the beer. From the menu I ordered a draft Myanmar Premium, listed at 500 ml and price of 3000. What I got was a tall and skinny glass that was way far from 500 ml. In my bill the item appeared as Myanmar Premium Draft 330 ml with a price of 3500. Seriously? Staff were polite, friendly and quick. Food was a bit tasteless, below average, probably too heavily "adjusted" for the...
Read moreI was traveling alone, so I was looking for a good but casual restaurant near where I was staying. The concierge recommended this place which was 5 minutes walk from the Pullman hotel. It was totally safe walking to get to the hotel.
The restaurant was very popular among expat community. The server was very helpful trying to find me a table tucked in the booth, so I had my own space without being seen that I was dining alone among many group of people around.
I ordered watermelon juice, Burmese tea salad and chicken curry with pea rice.
I recommend requesting juice without sugar - sometimes they add sugar water. Chicken curry was absolute must to try. The meat falls apart so easily! The curry isn’t the Indiana style - more tomato paste base than spicy Indians curry. Highly recommend their tealeaf salad. Very flavorful dish.
Service was really good, friendly staff. I wish I had a chance to try many more dish.. hope to go back in...
