It’s a small authentic Dutch snackbar. They still have the old skool look.

The “eierbal” is a must try! Typical Gronings snack. It is a fried ball filled with a boiled egg, around the boiled egg there is a layer of smashed potatoes in the flavour curry (really tasty!) and the outer layer is surrounded with bread-crumbs like the Dutch kroket.

Het was weer Zondag, oftewel tijd voor een snackbar bezoekje. Onze eerste gedachte ging uit naar Ten Boer, dus op naar Snackbar ''de Buuren'' aldaar aangekomen troffen we lege vitrines en chagrijnig personeel aan. Het was immers al 19:45 en het zwaar christelijke Ten Boer sluit haar winkels al om 20:00. Wij besloten dus om naar Cafetaria de Koning in Bedum te gaan, een keuze waarvan wij geen spijt kregen.

Bij binnenkomst in het pittoreske smulparadijs viel ons gelijk op dat het een echte cafetaria was zonder de overbodige poespas. Gelukkig konden we in deze cafetaria nog wel bestellen op ons belachelijke zondagse tijdstip, want klant is natuurlijk ''Koning''.

De friet bleek erg lekker te zijn hoorde ik van mijn vrienden, echter was ik het daar niet mee eens. Na een nacht/ochtend Paradigm smaakt zelfs de lekkerste lekkernij naar schuurpapier. Er werd ons nog verteld dat de ijsmachine het deed, een echt pluspuntje van de zaak. Hier werd dan ook gebruik van gemaakt door ons.

Ook de sfeer in de cafetaria is erg gezellig, zo was er een hele aardige vrouw die nog een tijdje met ons gesproken heeft tijdens het wachten op haar bestelling. Wij vragen ons alleen tot op de dag van vandaag ons af of ze nou haar muts al heeft afgedaan.

Kortom: Goede service, lekkere patat, leuke mensen Niet geschikt als je de dag ervoor...

Supposedly this is the centre and birth place of the eierbal. We went there as a group of 8 mid-afternoon to try our first one. It's pretty good and has some similarities with Scottish egg. The balance of crispy crust, curry ragou and egg in the middle do work well together. The shop looks humble and unpretentious from the outside which adds to its character....
