We had a bit of a struggle finding the place since the location was mislabeled on Google, and we weren't expecting to find a restaurant in a building like that. The inside reminded me of charming common room. I guess it does need a little work but it's welcoming, relaxing. We were made to feel very welcome, the man who served us was happy to chat and explain things, as I'd never had Syrian food before.
All of that is important of course, but for the food that followed, I'd have forgiven a lot. I don't remember the names of all the dishes we had (we had the collection of appetisers), but the tabouleh centerpiece and hummus and other dips were brilliant. (So were the little fried morsels on the side, but I can't remember their names.) The only thing that worried me was that it felt like a full meal rather than an appetiser. I had serious doubts I'd be able to finish my main. In the end I managed, barely. I had the Mujaddara and my partner one of the stews. I thought the starter would completely eclipse any food that followed it. Happily, I was wrong. It was gorgeously (and to me unfamiliarly) seasoned, satisfying soul food.
We took our time letting it all sink in, and after half an hour or so, we had to try their desserts. We couldn't eat food that good and leave before the finale. We had their own recipe baklava, something that I normally can't eat, since it's usually just too sweet for my liking. When he explained the different desserts to me, he mentioned that their baklava was less sweet though, and after the first two courses, I was happy to just take it on faith and try. Bliss. We also tried their flower tea, it wasn't on the menu, we lucked into that one by asking for generic tea. I can highly recommend it.
In short, if you're doubting the ridiculously high rating this place gets, do yourself a favour and treat yourself to an evening here. You...
Read moreOn my short visit to Groningen, I was looking for something to eat, by accident I come Yhami Yhami across, Syrian speciality food. I don’t regret a bit, very nice decor and spacious place, traditional music, and a calm welcome vibe. The menu is very attractive with a variety of dishes, vegetarian/meat.. small/big. The staff is very friendly, and the food is so delicious. I had the grilled entrecôte with grill veggies in the oven. I recommend without any doubts.
As a very attentive gesture I got a treat with baklava vegan. Just...
