De Maatschappij Bar Restaurant Catering — Restaurant in The Hague

Judging by the looks and location--and country, one wouldn't expect great food. Most the places in the area simply bring the world's expection of Schevingen down to the very basic. The interiors invite locals, whom you'd expect wouldn't care too much about quality or creativity in food, ultra-calvinistic you might say, but that turns out to be a wrong assumption. This place is one of the very few places in Scheveningen--and the rest of The Hague for that matter, that raises the bar and puts the whole row of beach restaurants to shame--not that any of those restaurants will ever care. Truly, the only way to put those shameless restaurateurs out of business is to never go there and instead go to places like this one, where the chef DOES care about the food he serves. I had the Scheveningse Proeferij, a sampler of fresh seafood products typical of the area, elegantly plated, and simply delightful. Let's face it, unless you're dining at a Michelin-starred restaurant, you shouldn't expect any Dutch restaurant to care about what food looks like on a plate, much less if it were a sampler of humble traditional Scheveningen fish. Here, they serve their "humble" culture with pride. I always come here to drink a glass of red, granted I don't get a choice of different reds, BUT the house wine does the job, again, not something you'd expect from a bar that looks rather..."traditional", a rather nice translation for the Dutch word "oudbollig". Hold on to your seats, folks, but while the Dutch are infamously stingy, this place actually serves...free food! Yes, the chef regularly serves little beautiful little creations on a platter they pass around to every table. Yeah, take some time to let that sink in. But wait, there's more! I might as well just say that unicorns exist, or Santa Clause, or Big Foot, but at this place, in Holland (above the river), you'll get SERVICE WITH A SMILE. Need I say more? I've lived in The Netherlands for 26 years now and bad service has been the norm, seriously, getting friendly service has become unsettling. Friendly service has become more figmental than UFO's at this point, and any staff who finds enough reason to smile--with sincerity I might add, and any chef that still has some passion for food without being pretentious, deserve to be enshrined in Dutch history forever. This place has restored my faith...

WEGBLIJVEN HIER!

Gisteren voor het eerst in mijn leven bij een Nederlands restaurant misleid/genaaid of hoe je het ook noemen wilt. Net klaar bij het nieuwe huis van mijn ouders en we zien op een bord staan een burger voor 9,95 met friet en patat.

Mooie deal denk je dan? Tot we gingen zitten en eten en we de rekening gingen betalen. We mochten mooi het dubbele betalen want er zou met kleine lettertjes staan: TAKEAWAY. Ik dacht even dat ik het zelf over het hoofd had gezien maar ik liep naar buiten en het stond nergens.

Ober weer geroepen en gezegd dat het er niet staat, hij hield vol van wel. Hij liep mee en het stond er inderdaad niet. Toen liep die samen met mij naar het andere bord waar het wel op stond in MINI letters. Ik gaf aan dat ik als gast niet alle borden ga zitten aflezen en dit gewoon misleiding is.

Het antwoord wat ik kreeg:

Zo werkt de horeca meneer...... :'(

Man man man.... Ik heb jaren in de horeca gewerkt en dit is gewoon niet hoe je jezelf als gastheer hoort op te stellen , je staat voor schut voor andere gasten en je voelt je belazerd.

Het gaat mij er dus puur om dat je iets moois adverteert, maar eigenlijk bewust je gasten misleidt. En het erge van alles: een burger bij mijn snackbar op de hoek is van dezelfde kwaliteit.

Schaam jullie kapot!

Ps: Uiteindelijk na aandringen 15 euro terug gekregen. Het personeel was wel aardig dus ik neem het ook alleen de manager/eigenaar kwalijk.

Win voor de maatschappij? 10 euro + een teleurgestelde gast die slechte reclame...

The location of the restaurant is really nice and the food was good, BUT: the burger in the menu was clarified as vegan although it normally comes with a honey bbq sauce - honey is not vegan. The burger was also 4€ more expensive than the normal burger as shown in the menu. That's incomprehensible and not justified at all. It was a small burger with not much on it, not worth 12€. The service was good though. We didn't have to go to the hotel hungry but I wouldn't go eat there...
