Creative solutions to the -Venlo problem-

In 2024, a group of colleagues found themselves stranded in a cozy yet strange restaurant in Venlo (Netherlands). What follows is the abstract of the problem they faced when ordering food.

The menu on a black board consisted of two lists: tapas, and main dishes. When ordering, a distressed waitress had to clarify that, unfortunately, each table could either order tapas or main dishes, but never both. The reason was not given and exceptions never accepted.

International Experts have come up with a list of creative solutions that are meant to circumnavigate such problems in different scenarios.

Scenario A - full house

After taking votes, all comrades agree on sharing either tapas or main dishes. The dilemma is easily solved.

Scenarios B - failed elections

In which a comradeship should find itself agreeable to both tapas and main dishes equally, and would therefore fail to find a voting majority.

B1 - separatists The group splits into minor groups, depending on tapas or dishes preferences. The two groups shall dine separately and pay separately.

B2 - coalitions The group splits on minor groups but with the secret intention of sharing all food. In this nasty scenario, the two tables secretly divert their own half-eaten food to the others without being seen. Both tables should taste both tapas and main dishes. Bills are separated and regulated apart.

B3 - exclusion A lucky vast majority preference is established. Only one person, not agreeing on the chosen food, shall dine alone in a different table. This might create further social friction.

B4 - diversion The table finds a loophole in the system. Convincing the waitress to serve both menus in one table as long as Two different bills are produced. The kitchen therefore will think of serving two different parties.

C - fugue The group elopes the restaurant...

Very nice Tapas Bar, I definately recommend a visit. Since there was no english or german menu card, I was a little lost. BUT I found a hint in the card that you should ask a waiter for a Tapas Menu what I did. They offered me a surprise menu and I have been surprised in a very positive way: Four rounds with lots of delicious food and the price was also a surprise. I expected it to be a lot more. I paid for water and this very satisfying menu only...

Dit restaurant werd mij warm aanbevolen door bekenden.

Bij binnenkomst wordt je verrast door een leuke sfeer. Gelukkig hadden wij eerder op de middag gereserveerd, want alle tafels waren bezet. Gezien de COVID maatregelen, was het leuk te zien dat het terras uitgebreid was door middel van een samenwerking van omringende winkels die hun wandelpaden toch niet naar sluitingstijd gebruikte. Bijzonder!

Stiekem had ik gehoopt op een bijzonder drankje, ik probeer altijd graag drankjes uit. Helaas hadden ze geen drankenkaart. Achteraf spotte ik wel dat ze een leuke gin tonic hadden, alleen stond die verstopt achter de gasten op een bord. Gemiste kans voor mij.

Graag had ik het tapas menu willen nemen, echter ging mijn dinerpartner daarin niet mee. Indische rijsttafel dan maar, wat alsnog een sterke optie is voor mensen met keuzestress en zoveel fantastische keuzes.

Het eten is geweldig authentiek Indonesisch. Normaliter ben ik absoluut geen saté eter, maar deze pindasaus was gewoon LEKKER! Het kippenvlees was ongelooflijk mals, de textuur van het vlees was werkelijk de ster van de avond. De atjar was verfrissend. Rijst was voor mij wel iets te droog en daarmee het rundvlees te overweldigend omdat ik deze niet met het rijst kon(wou) mengen.

Uiteindelijk was het toetje ook lekker vullend.
