Though I dearly love this country, I've had a lot of bad burgers here. Ones I couldn't even finish. Even the TGIFriday's in Utrecht, which you'd expect to follow American burger traditions, served me a positively inedible patty. And while if I'm fully critical, this place could learn to make a fine panade to enrich their burgers and not mix them quite so firmly, it was nevertheless palatable enough for my burger-snob self to reasonably enjoy and finish. That is a rare compliment here. NL does many things amazingly well such as healthcare and education and welfare, a level of social genius which I thoroughly wish my native land would emulate, but burgers are not on that list.
On the other hand, Pandarve's pulled chicken loaded fries? PHENOMENAL. I would eat these any day of the week. What a wonderful lunch or dinner. The size was just about meal-worthy by itself. The fries were hot and optimally cooked. The sauces and vegetables were lovely. My only complaint would be a wish for a few more jalapenos, but I understand that Netherlanders are not as fond of a hellbound tongue as someone from the country that bred the luscious murder that is Carolina Reaper.
I'm not usually a big fan of cinnamon outside of pumpkin pie, but they use it well in their balanced rib sauce; neither too sweet nor too dry. I'm not much for sate sauce; it's usually excessively peanutty to me, but theirs was also quite balanced. The peanut was the star with many supporting actors, rather than being its sole flavor. I feel like a convert now.
This place knows how to food. Chef's kiss. They're not the cheapest ever, but quite reasonable for what you get and the quality of it. Their portions are perfect, and their food is worth at least a baker's dozen of cheap disappointing fry shop meals. Eat out less often, but get quality food you couldn't make for yourself; that's my motto.
The coleslaw seemed to be a tiny container of sauce rather than anything with a large amount of delicious cabbage, but that is nevertheless not enough to drag my score down from a five. I don't think Michelin stars are on the table, but that is fine. Still delicious, still reasonably priced, still hot and fresh and lovely even when delivered. Pandarve, I will continue to be a repeat...
Read moreWe were looking for a quick lunch while strolling through Zeist and I saw this place had good reviews. We were helped by friendly staff, and could quickly sit down and order. The menu was very standard but we had a very nice carpaccio and salad. Please note there is no kids menu, but they do have bread & kroketten which...
