All style over substance. After much press hype about this place now serving breakfast on the weekend, we thought we'd try it out. Firstly, their website has not been updated with the new opening hours (2 weeks out of date) so had to call ahead to check if they were open. This was an indication of the level of service and attention to detail you can expect at The Corner. The decor and styling is on-point and gorgeous. Shame about the dire service and the misleading menu. There were more staff than customers, yet it was impossible to flag someone down to ask for some more water, ask for another round of coffee, ask for some milk to go with the tea, ask for clarification on the odd brown stuff that was put down on the table - looked like a cube of fudge, could have been honey. Turns out it was burnt nut butter. Thank goodness nobody had a nut allergy! Coffee was inconsistent- some came with an attempt at latte art and others not. Requested a single shot flat white which came with the standard two shots. The coffee itself was nice. And then there's the stingy portions - for a dish just shy of $20 , the single piece of toast that accompanied the smashed (which came whole ?!) avo was tragic. And the $6.50 for a side of bacon , 2 of the tiniest rashers of bacon. Nobody came at any point to check if we were okay or needed something. And at the end we had to again struggle to flag someone down to bring the bill. All such an effort when Sunday brunch with friends should be chilled and relaxing. We felt so bad about our choice of venue that we decided paid for the whole table. And when we paid, nobody asked "was everything okay?" as it is customary to do in hospitality. Such a pity as this place has the potential to be wonderful. In Auckland we are spoilt with an array of excellent cafes so there's no need t o have to put up with such disappointment, this was definitely our first and last visit...
Read moreWe had dinner here to watch with rugby with several friends last night. We thought it would be a bit of fun although was not as busy as we had envisaged. Service was good with drinks etc but I felt the food had really gone downhill since I last ate here. Personally we struggled to find anything on the menu that wasn’t deep fried’!!! But settled in the end for several meals of chicken schnitzel, one chicken taco and a chicken burger. The schnitzels looked deep fried not crumbed with a dessert spoon full size of coldslaw and everyone had to order chips on the side as there were little else in the way of side offerings. The burger a standard chicken burger was just ok. The chicken taco looked the best as it wasn’t deep fried and looked reasonably healthy. Ok I kno it’s a pub but we felt these meals were below average standard for the prices charged. An example of good pub food eg Swashbucklers’ who used to serve food like this until they really lifted their standards a few years back when the owners changed and started to offer more varied options eg pan friend and crumbed. Decent sides of tasty salads. Please don’t assume everyone just wants chips as their...
Read moreI have been in NZ for 12 years, this is the 1st proper Pub I have had the pleasure of visiting. Fantastic staff, engaged lively and happy in their work, very attentive. Great barman who knows how to pour a Guinness properly, not rushed and delivered to me when it was ready. Irish heritage for sure and the experience was just like an Irish bar. All that was missing was a couple of locals with Music in their hearts who would strike up a session and more musicians would come/go and join in. Having said that the warriors were playing so there was action and atmosphere a plenty. I will be back and make the effort to book accommodation in this area again just to go to the Corner Bar. Fantastic meal was had which was the best value i experienced on this trip to Auckland, fresh ingrediencies perfectly cooked , simple short...
