I was really upset after having breakfast by myself at Scottâs this morning - After being recommended by family to come, on my business trip to Hamilton.
The wait staff were lovely - service was very efficient - the only thing was that I ordered the Poached fruit with Oat & Almond Granola. When it came, it looked lovely, and I was just about to eat a spoonful, when I noticed it was laced with lots of peanuts. Iâm anaphylactic to peanuts specifically, and the menu didnât state it contained other nuts, so I didnât think to question, as I usually would. However, I asked the waitress if the kitchen could change it, to a version without peanuts, and she said sure. When it came back, the granola with oats AND peanuts was gone, and I was simply left with fruit and yoghurt.
I therefore ate half of what I had ordered, and when I went to pay, I inquired as to whether I would be able to get a discount, due to the fact that I had only received half of what was stated on the menu. I was left with the manager, and was then questioned as to the seriousness of my allergy, why I didnât tell the wait staff of my allergy, and I could sense the manager was wanting to tell me how to manage my allergy ânext timeâ, with the things she said, and stopped herself from saying. It was condescending, and as if I were a child, needing to be schooled on how to function when ordering my food at a cafe. She took off a couple of dollars from my bill, (literally two), and I walked out almost in tears, and had a cry in my car, on my way to work.
I have not been into anaphylactic shock since I was a child, because Iâm so careful with my allergy. I also donât like to feel like a burden, and manage my allergy very well, on my own terms. This morning, I felt like an inconvenience, and an idiot, because of something that I was born with. I would suggest that Scottâs make VERY clear what exactly are the main ingredients in their food. If something has a hell of a lot of peanuts in it, you need to call it âOat & NUT granolaâ - that way, a person with a severe nut allergy will think to question it further.
I donât know if I want to return after such an...
