Came in for Saturday lunch. Had beef nachos. And a coffee. Then again on Wednesday night trivia. Had cheesy garlic ciabata, beer battered fries. Seasoned wedges, lemon pepper squid, dumplings. Nice food, and generous portions. Service was professional, easy going, very friendly and efficient. Served at the food counter by a lovely worker named Izzy, she also brought our food out. An approachable and helpful girl. Watched her multi task between tables maintaining service throughout the venue. Also friendly bar worker named Janine, too was helpful and approachable and quick with bringing the coffee out. Thank you, visiting from overseas, next visit nz - we'll be back.

It was such a beautiful venue however it was hard to find a park, and a table especially if the rugby is on, fair call, but we had phoned to make a booking in advance and were told they don't do bookings. The prices were a tad on the pricey side for a bristo, nevertheless our table of five ordered: x4 steak meals ($48 each), x1 bangers and mash ($28), x1 wedges with bacon ($23) and chicken pieces (unsure on the price), brownie with bailey's ice cream (delicious, and a large portion, $14.50) plus drinks (alcoholic, non-alcoholic and coffees) the coffees had been over roasted and they were tiny for the price we paid.

An unexpected combination of a country pub feel though it is a short drive from the centre of Auckland. The main building is old and historic (by NZ standards) and on a sunny day the grounds, with the outdoor tables and umbrellas, are a great option. Inside there are the typical bars and dining of a pub. The food and drinks were generously sized and tasted fine. Service was a bit slow, they seemed really busy, but friendly enough and not intrusive. Basically, this is the real thing not an imitation.

The Professor and I were invited to Friday lunch at the Tavern. It was a spectacular day walking into the enterprise a bit earlier than scheduled. A busy lunch time trade was happening but there were no queues at the bar where we were attended to quickly and cheerfully. We took in the ambiance over an unhurried beer. Our luncheon participants arrived, were quickly supplied with drinks from the bar tender and settled unmolested to catch up. Eventually I and the other male participants were dispatched to the kitchen to place our food order. No problem with the Professors exchange chips for salad requirement then we were back at the table discussing righting wrongs. Food came out all but one. The time the food was on the table seemed interminable but it was probably only a few minutes. Once we tucked in the food had maintained temperature and was delicious. The Professor thought more spice and thickness in the sauce but concluded its level of spice was about right for most people. Extra spicy option could be the answer. Apparently the enterprise had won and an award for it's offerings that day. I think the award...

There is something for everyone at Northcote Tavern. You can choose to enjoy the garden bar or hang around the pub tables or sit in the shade of an umbrella on the outdoor grass area, with the chilled drink of your choice.

Northcote Tavern is the perfect stop for lunch or dinner, with its Bistro serving a wide selection of delicious foods; my personal favourites are the prawn twisters, the lamb and roast vegetable salad, and the wedges. If you really cannot decide what to choose from the Bistro menu, choose one of their selection platters. You have the option between having a surf platter or turf platter (or just get both!) Both platters are enough to make you want to come back tomorrow... I know I did.

Aside of drinks and food, the Tavern is great for family or group fun. They boast a decent sized grassy area for children to run around in (parent supervised of course) and even a shell and sand area designed for guests to bring boules/pétanque.

Other activities: Kareoke night. Raffles on Sundays. Join the Northcote Tavern fishing club. Dart...
