The Screening Room — Restaurant in Masterton

Very disappointing! We are an older couple and can't recommend this place at all. We asked to sit in the large (and empty, except for people at 3 tables) dining area at a small table and were told we had to go out to the corridor area as the tables for 2 people were out there. We thought that was really odd as the main area was mostly empty and there were plenty of spare tables of all sized settings available there. After we had ordered our meal, it became apparent that we had been sent out the back and were right next to the toilets. We should have left then... After a short time, a group of 4 more older customers arrived and were also sent out the back. My partner and I had the fish burger and the beef burger. Both were on quite small buns, the fish burger had a small piece of fish about 3 cm square on it. My partner enjoyed the meat in the beef burger. We felt a bit short-changed by the size of the meal for around $25 each. When we went to pay, we asked why we had been sent out the back away from all the other diners, and mentioned that we would never have chosen to sit in a back corridor next to the toilets. I asked if it was because we were older (all the outside dining space was full of young people and the couple of tables in the main area were likewise. We were told that every other table was booked- really?????? They were all still empty when we left. It seems to us that if you aren't young, you are not welcome here. On our walk back to our car, we checked out all the other nearby eateries. They had a range of age groups in them and their menus (and the food we could see) looked a far more attractive proposition. We had a great "movie meal deal" experience here a few weeks ago, having decided to "give it another go" after our previous experience. Good food, great service. Was so much better than the last time we were here! Some weeks back, my wife and I dined here for our wedding anniversary. The food was good, well presented and tasty. The service was 'interesting'. I often wonder if wait staff in Masterton restaurants simply receive no training at all. The young guy who appeared to be in some manager role tried but the other waiting staff were pretty poor. Long wait for drinks, long wait for food service even though the waitress who served us did not appear busy but spent most of her time chatting behind the service counter. No attempt to check on us after bringing our food and no attempt to check on our drinks. No further attempt to sell us deserts so I went up to the counter and asked for desert menus. The staff member there (who was doing less than nothing) nodded her head to someone else to serve me. It's a pity because it's a lovely venue and the chef clearly...

EXCEPTIONAL!!!! The Screening Room offers gourmet dining, which is not only beautifully represented but taste is out of this world!!! Lemon Meringue cheesecake should definitely entice its absolutely divine (and addictive 🤣🤣) Dinner here is an experience you absolutely must have... beautifully presented quality food, staff are very attentive and clearly understand Service with excellence!!! Atmosphere is fabulous, gentle soft music which is pleasant, easy on the ear & allows you to truly engage with whomever your dining with. This review does not even begin to do this place justice... its definitely an experience not to be missed and no doubt like I will make The Screening Room your future go to place...
