Lovely juicy duck, would be nice if skin was crispy. Other foods looks great, definitely a place I'll have to visit repeatedly to try other items on the menu. Great friendly service too from the lady at the counter.
There is a problem though. When the Chef came out to cut the duck, he didn't seem happy, when he finish and I thanked him, he muttered something I couldn't quite catch. By his attitude, body language, lack of smiley & friendly face, the tone of whatever he said, it wasn't nice. Before he came to my table, he was very happy & friendly & smiley when cutting the duck for table next to me with 3 Chinese.
I was with a kiwi friend, I speak Mandarin too but didn't as it seems rude when with non-Mandarin speakers. He, the Chef, doesn't like Europeans or didn't like the fact that, he assumed, I didn't speak Mandarin. Going by the reviews on here, my guess isn't wrong.
Such a nice restaurant ruined by the attitude of the Chef. Yet I feel it's wrong to give it a bad review. Rest of the staff are super...
Read moreWe've been eating here for thr past 2 years, each time we leave full and happy. The peking duck is a great value at $60, but you do need to order it 1 hour in advance. They serve the best salty egg yolk green beans, and the homemade pancake is huge and a fantastic value at $8. We brought my parents here when they visited NZ and they loved all the dishes we ordered. Highly recommended!
Update: came back again and the food was excellent! The chef is very consistent in his cooking which we appreciate, as not all chinese restaurants are consistent and you never know what you're gonna get. Not here! The free jasmine tea is enjoyable as it's not too strong, not too weak (the owner says she buys the tea leaves from a specialty shop). The 20% off promotion is...
Read moreAn East Auckland staple which you need to try, has been around for a very long time and is popular for a reason. One of the best Beijing roast ducks in town!
One of the few, if not the only, place where the chef cuts the duck in front of your table so you can see that you are getting all of the parts.
A lot of other great dishes on the menu to try too so you will never leave with an empty stomach. Just remember to book a table just advance if you want to have the Beijing duck, otherwise sometimes they are still able to prepare one for you in around plus or minus 40 mins.
Classic Chinese restaurant interior with the bright coloured walls and warm lights, but you can still get nice photos...
