The Black Sheep Restaurant and Bar — Restaurant in Otago

We were excited to try the Black Sheep restaurant as it had great reviews and we were able to walk to it from our airbnb. Unfortunately, we did not feel that it lived up to those great reviews the evening that we ate there.

We had made a reservation and were promptly seated when we arrived (although the restaurant was not busy the night that we were there) and the service throughout the meal was excellent.

We started with two of their craft cocktails--a gin cocktail for my husband and a vodka and wine special of the day cocktail for me. Both were delicious!

We ordered the seafood chowder for our starter. While it did have a decent amount of seafood in it, it lacked flavor. Both my husband and I added salt and pepper to it, and even then, it was not tasty. I ordered the Pork: Two Ways (a slow-braised pork belly & a cider -cured pork medallion) for my main course, and my husband ordered the slow-braised lamb shank. The pork belly portion of my main was tasty, but the pork medallions were not seasoned well and were fairly tasteless (I usually worry about my food being too-highly seasoned, so this was a first for me). My husband did not care for the flavor of his lamb shank. It came with green beans, and although we like our veggies al-dente, these were very hard to cut with a knife and fork.

Went for dinner and had a great experience. I’m a first time mum with a 11 week old and I’m always nervous to take him anywhere especially to a food establishment. The server was lovely, friendly, and made us feel welcome with the baby. She saw me pull out his bottle and immediately came over and offered to heat it up and help with anything else we needed. Made me feel much more relaxed and able to enjoy a night out. I didn’t catch our servers name but she was a lovely lady and told me she has two children aged 14 and 7. The food was great. Lovely little restaurant in Mosgiel who also have an amazing relationship and are very involved with their local community. The portions are massive so would probably do you for two meals if you're an average eater which is fine by me. We all ordered something different and nobody had any complaints about their meals. It came out quick and the wait staff were lovely. Great kids menu and there's toys and coloring in to keep them busy. We will happily come...
