I like the ambience and the setup where you order at the counter. The beer selection is good and they let us taste to make sure we got something we liked. But the menu wasn't especially varied. I got the burger, which had a weird assortment of things that came standard on it. They didn't ask how I wanted it cooked and it came out well done--that may be legally required in New Zealand or something, but it's not good, and is a shame to do with their nice local beef. It was on a bun that seemed like what Dickensian novels call hardtack, which was annoying because the burger squeezed out the back when I tried to bite through the bun. I don't know why anyone serves shoestring fries, if I wanted those I'd go to McDonald's, although these were better than some because they were tossed in lemon pepper. My friend's salmon on pesto risotto was good, he didn't mind that it was raw rather than flaky. But they kept giving us the stink eye and collecting our dishes as we ate. They even came to get the salt and paper shakers as if it was closing time...except that it was 8:20. It seemed like a bunch of their friends were coming in to hang out; that's fine, but really, forcing paying customers out under those circumstances was really pretty tacky. I want to sit and enjoy my food, not be given the bum's rush before 9pm. There's plenty of parking. It's towards one end of Arrowtown town center, on the main street.
