5 Stars – A Golden Gem in Golden Bay

I had an absolutely top-tier experience at Bay Takeaways in Tākaka that I just had to share.

I popped in for a bite, but ran into a minor hiccup—my cards weren’t working and they don’t accept PayWave. No stress though, the ATM was right across the road. When I came back, I realized I was a bit short—the burger I’d ordered was $22.50 and I only had $20 cash on me. Without hesitation, the lovely staff member behind the counter said, “Don’t worry about it—it’s on me.” That kind of generosity is rare these days, and it really stuck with me.

From the very first moment, the communication was friendly, warm, and problem-solving. She didn’t make it awkward—just helped find a solution with genuine kindness. And not only that, she still gave me the full order, no corners cut.

Now let’s talk about the burger. This wasn’t just any fish burger. This thing was monumental. The biggest, most stacked, juicy fish burger I’ve ever laid my hands on—and I’ve been around. I honestly thought they must have super-sized it for me just for being charming. But when I called back to thank them, I was told that’s just the standard burger. What?!

To top it off, there was so much fish in it that I actually pulled a piece out—and now I’ve got a bonus side of fish to enjoy later. Talk about value.

Bay Takeaways isn’t just a food spot—it’s a reminder that good people, great food, and honest service still exist. If you’re in Golden Bay, do yourself a favor and get yourself a burger. You’ll leave full—in belly...

As ever the food was great, little disappointed in the size of the hoki we paid $5.50 for though. EDIT * After input from Bay Takeaway and hubby who purchased tea last night; I stand corrected. It was gurnard and I'm sure hubby said it was $5.50, the $5 elephant fish is hard to go past but I do like crumbed fish, which isn't always available. The first time I purchased crumbed fish from Bay I paid something like $8.50 and it was minuscule and I complained (something I rarely do). Rhys apologized and next time me we ordered he rectified this...he is the best EVER business owner at accepting and taking on board complaints, suggestions and criticism! His staff always act the same way and you couldn't deal with a better business. Regardless... a 5 star rating for always doing the right thing and cooking scrummy...

So delicious! I highly recommend Bay Takeaway. We went two nights in a row it was that good. The burgers are amazing and they are massive so you can share one between two. The price is decent for the quality food you receive. The chips are lovely and the food isn't dripping with oil. Best burgers we have had in a long time with fresh ingredients. Also the staff are very nice and show pride in what they present you. You will most like wait 30 minutes for your food but it proves that this food is in demand and others also believe it is...
