Update: the quality of the components of the Morel Mushroom steak have fallen significantly. Compare the latest picture I have uploaded to the first one and you’ll see the difference. Really half hearted in terms of quantity, quality and presentation.
So I’d been wanting this write this one for a while now and I finally got the time. My experience with RARE was love/hate (which is rare for me) but mostly love.
• Food: 🦀 Crab Lollipop: 4/10 The starter we got was very disappointing for me and probably the only thing I disliked about my experience. It was tiny hollow crab claws and microscopic shreds of crab meat floating about in a sea of oil which was supposedly the lemon garlic butter sauce. They really need to add some texture and contrast to this atrocity. I suggest adding an accompaniment of bread and any carb to balance out all the grease. Also 0 for presentation.
Main: 🥩 The steaks however were a completely different story and won me over.
• Beef Steak with Morel Mushroom sauce: 10/10 I was blown away by how good this steak was. A perfect medium well with a good sear. The sauce was beautifully balanced and a perfect accompaniment to the steak. I was surprised how good everything on the “platter” was. The salad was refreshing and zingy with a lot of complexity, I really appreciated the addition of pomegranate and caramelised walnuts for added crunch. The fire roasted vegetable were cold but I loved the crispy aubergine with sour-cream. The mac and cheese and creamy spinach was to die for. The deep fried sweet potato was ingenious and delicious. Kudos to the chef for this one.
• Surf and Turf: 7/10 Though I only tasted it, I felt this was a pretty solid choice and the seafood was lovely but I really liked the sauce for the morel mushroom better and l felt that the bone marrow was fine as far as theatrics and gimmicks go but it brought no flavour and no texture, they need to season the bone marrow with herbs and garlic and cook it overtime to get better results. • Drinks: 6/10 The strawberry lemonade was way too sweet and artificial.
•Ambiance: 10/10 Absolutely adored the ambiance, it has a vibe which feels like a fusion between a old country outback restaurant and todays neon aesthetics. I like that it’s kind of a elevated version of of Howdy, the birthplace of their famed bone marrow steak. The staff is super accommodating and very thorough in explaining everything and the theatrics and a huge bonus. Also best takeaway packaging I’ve experienced...
Read moreAh, the enigmatic charm of Rare! This place is not just a restaurant, it's a complete experience, with plot twists that M. Night Shyamalan could only dream of. Let me take you on this whirlwind journey.
Our adventure began with an intriguing game of "Reservation Roulette". Despite making a booking, our name apparently vanished into the ether. The resident Houdini at the entrance, who was as cheerful as a cat in a bathtub, eventually cracked the case with the help of my call records. And voila! Suddenly, we were teleported to a far-flung corner of their outdoor seating.
This delightful game of 'wait-and-seek' continued as we sought out menus and flagging down waitstaff to take our order. After getting their attention (hint: semaphore flags might help), we finally ordered the beef carpaccio, which was a flavor-packed victory.
Then came the main course. I opted for the Surf n Turf while my friend, like a brave gladiator, went for the live beef steak. This wasn't just a meal; it was a spectacle, complete with a torch and gas canisters dangerously close to a live flame. The chef, doubling as a daredevil stuntman, managed to avoid blowing us to smithereens, although we did have to request a safety distance. Safety first? More like safety optional!
Sadly, the steak was as medium rare as a unicorn sighting, but my friend soldiered on and polished it off, not wanting to delay their imminent closing. As for my steak, it was an unmitigated triumph, perfectly medium rare. The garlic was the unsung hero, providing a memorable flavor punch.
The final twist in our saga was the 'One Bill Policy'. Want to split the check? Good luck! The waiter treated the bill like a sacred scroll that couldn't be divided.
At Rare, they like to keep things singular. One table, one bill, making the payment process feel like a negotiation at the UN council.
In the end, it's clear that a trip to Rare is anything but ordinary. It's a restaurant, magic show, and survival game all rolled into one. It's like dinner theater, but the drama is offstage, and the audience is also the cast. Buckle up for the ride, folks! And remember - keep your sense of humor, and maybe bring your own torch - you never know when it might...
