As we walked down the streets of Guia we could smell the smoke in the air, the beautiful scent of chicken fat, chilli oil and garlic dripping onto hot coals. There’s a number of restaurants who all cook Piri Piri chicken within the town, it’s a local delicacy, the air was delicious.
Ramires had a classic homely environment. We were given an authentic Portuguese spread; Chips, bread, Rice, olives, salad and of course frango Piri Piri.
This Piri Piri chicken, the original recipe, utilised a concentrated oil which had flavours of Piri Piri chillies, garlic and lemon infused in the oil. This differed from our initial expectations and the ‘peri-peri’ sauce that is known around the world, being usually a runny-red sauce. It was so fascinating to see it was instead an oil base.

I was excited to try it, but the moment I saw it, I was disappointed. The portion was so small I ordered a second one right away. The chicken itself was dry, and the oil had little to no flavor. Is this really what all the buzz is about? Just grilled chicken with some spice and grease?
To make things worse, the waiter forgot my drinks. I had to point it out or they wouldn’t have come. Later, when I wanted dessert, I waited about 10 minutes and had to make repeated eye contact before he finally noticed.
The bill was €30. Not outrageous, but given the tiny size of the chicken, I expected better value. Honestly, I’ve had better, bigger, and tastier chicken for less in Lisbon at Bonjardim, and that’s in the capital city. This drive out here was not worth it.
On a positive note, the flan de pudim and the tomato salad...
