Adega Madeirense — Restaurant in Funchal

Avoid this restaurant if you don’t want to be ripped off. Only wanted a snack steak sandwich but came with all accompaniments. Questioned this and was advised same price and included but guess what, was double the price advertised. Steak sandwich should be done under trades description because it was like a McDonald’s McMuffin. Partner had pizza which was like a frozen version from a supermarket. Best bit was given some bread, olives and cheese at start and as there were 4 of us charged 10 Euros. To add insult they removed halfway through eating and actually took away my plate as I was eating. Also asked for water and told only bottled water which turned out to be 4.50 euros when everywhere else provided a jug of cold water. The style of the restaurant is aiming for high class but the food and being ripped off is like a poor takeaway. Avoid as far better in Funchal and less cost. Ps also had stomach cramps throughout the night so don’t doubt where that...

Greeter was super friendly and chatty. Thought I give this place a try just for him (I saw the rating)

Honestly inside was good, with decent view and staff were attentive. However, compared to other places they were not very friendly.

I know it's a tourist trap thing, but laying down starter without asking for it is bit low. I would've asked for it anyway but really....this was unnecessary.

Got shrimp and octopus (boiled and grilled). They were bland. Octopus was overdone so there was no texture to speak of. It wasn't bad, but it was nothing great.

Food charge was higher than expected as well, considering nearby restaurants had better food and service for less. Heard drinks are good but never stayed for that. Across road there is a Japanese, a Chinese and an Italian restaurant all on a balcony with better food and price. sorry guys, but you gotta step up your game to stay...

Watch out for the "double conversion" catch - we are vegetarians and went here after seeing several options on the menu. We opted for a mushroom omelette, which was OK but not very warm; the chips were hot and tasty and the salad (which was included) didn't arrive until we'd almost finished. So, an adequate but not outstanding meal. We were given a bill of 45.80€, which we opted to pay in Euros and paid with our pre-paid card. On checking with our bank, the 45.80 had been converted to GBP £42.95 and the back into Euros 48.64€. Moral - check what you're actually paying! Won't...
