6th September 2023. We just went into MAMMA. There was no one on the desk so we went in to shout for assistance. The lady came back from lunch or whatever.
It cost €10 for me and €5 for my 12 year old son.
We went in and it was basically art work that looks like it was never finished. A lot of it is nude art. Some art work was distasteful and mocked Religions such as Christianity and Islam.
All in all for €15 euros we spent 5 minutes of being unamused. I've never been through a museum so quickly. It's a big disappointment as we were expecting to spend at least half an hour perusing beautiful art work and mostly from what I saw my son and I could paint better, more interesting and more intriguing pieces.
A lot of the art work was a mix of magazines pictures cut out and stuck onto paintings. If you can't paint, don't submit your work to a museum. Just a thought.
All in all I rate this MAMMA Museum 1 star because it's pure sh!țè.
Museums are meant to be spectacular. They are meant to trigger thought, imagination and wonder. This was purely distasteful and maybe 6 pieces of art were really well done. Horribly mixed in amongst very mediocre art at best.
Some were in the style of Picasso. Some fixtures and a large chess board with pieces attached to wires to light then up.
The best art work was at the end. The wood work paintings were beautiful. You couldn't fault these pieces. I would have expected to have seen more of this type of art and I would have given it more stars. It's such a shame these pieces of wood work paintings were stuck here, in amongst unfinished looking, mediocre paintings. It's like the artist began painting, got the silhouettes complete and just didn't bother putting any details or shading on. The museum would do well to generate interest and income via leaving blank canvases and allowing the public to leave better art work (meaning they'd stay up to half an hour instead of 5 minutes).
We are not happy customers.
I am pretty glad we forgot our mobiles because I would have recorded myself and made a huge post about the things this Museum could do to improve it's quality of service to the public.
Quite simply, get better art work. Offer prints and stickers of the art work for sale. It's not...
Read moreThe tickets to this art exhibition cost 10 euros per person with dispensation for students and pensioners. The paintings here are all by the same artist and are mostly a modern dipiction of the artist's imagination. There is a mixture of artefacts with the paintings which portray a theme to provoke thought and feelings. The art is mostly modern abstract of the human body Paintings are set out in differing zones, often with a statemental text to accompany each zone for you to reflect upon. I found the place heavily emotional with some very dark mood art. It is clear the artist can do very fine art, but there was little of it for me to appreciate. Bearing in mind most people coming in are visitors to the island on holiday they probably think this is themed as the film Mama Mia - IT IS NOT. It's a great contrast from the beauty and lightness of Madeira. l think l would have liked to have seen something that lifted the soul Perhaps the artist no longer sees the world like this and it is a portrayal of his own inner foreboding. Go along and see what you think as art is only a matter of...
Read moreWent to see Robin Hird "Art of the Blues Guitar" concert at MAMMA last night. His playing is excellent and his pals on keyboard and drums made the 'set' of a tight Blues trio. The MAMMA museum as an intimate small venue is great too. My only gripe is that whilst Robins guitar skills are obvious and to be envied, he could do with a vocalist to complete the set. He did a couple of vocal numbers (one himself and one by the keyboardist) but the other songs as instrumentals went a bit too much towards sounding like The Shadows rather than Howling Wolf as a result. Having said that, the next time he plays at MAMMA or somewhere else on Madeira, you will be doing yourself a disservice by not going and seeing him. A solid A+++++. A glass of whatever and entry to the museum exhibits is included in the price. Get there early for a decent look around before...
