We were attracted to book a table at this restaurant as it was in such a pretty setting off an ordinary street. The flower garden is lovely and the tables beautifully laid. It also looked popular with tourists as was full. We arrived for our table late and were scolded by the man on reception but shown to a table. The staff were brusque with us and we felt uneasy. We wish we had been turned away, as what followed were unsatisfactory meals. We skipped the starters (feeling awkward about arriving late and unwelcomed) and ordered mains. The lamb leg and mash was dry and over-salted. Vegetables were limp and over-cooked. The side salad was fine but the prawn risotto was bland and unimaginative; basically savoury, creamy, rice pudding with a few prawns thrown in. It was clear that other people received better service and all but us, received madeira wine on arrival. After returning the lamb half uneaten, the response from the manager was a shrug. We paid the bill and left without bothering to discover what the desserts had to offer. The whole experience was such a disappointment, given the warm welcome and excellent food that we have received elsewhere in other restaurants in the...
Read moreI just finished my first course and not all that impressed. We stopped in as it looked like a nice patio, but so far the food has fallen short of expectations. Maybe I should have adjusted my expectations when I saw they charge for water. Not usually a good sign.
Shrimp cocktail was shredded lettuce, 7 medium sized previously frozen shrimp, and a relatively tasteless orange sauce drizzled ontop. For 8 euro, a pretty poor value.
Got the Seabass fillet. Total disappointment. Bland and tasteless. That is until you bite down into multiple bones. Oops, guess they forgot to remove them. Vegetables were just tossed in some oil and blanched. Mediocre at best. Sent it back. Got the lamb chops instead which actually weren’t bad! Vegetables still were poor. I suspect they really made sure the chops were done right after I send the previous plate back.
Partner had the beef stroganoff, which was - ton of rice, and a few small pieces of beef. Nothing special and disappointing.
Overall, I’ve found restaurants in Madeira are complete hit and miss. This one is a miss. The only redeeming quality is the patio. Don’t get sucked in by the nice tree with lights. The good...
Read moreWe had an excellent meal at O Dragoiero Restaurant last night - in fact the best and tastiest meal we've had in the time we've been in Madeira! We were welcomed with a complimentary glass of Madeiran wine, drunk while we chose from the Tourst Menu - superb value @ €17.90 p.p. From the Starter Menu, I chose Avocado with a Vinaigrette Dressing which was unusually presented on a plate with the Avocado sliced and a dressing including onions and tomatoes lying on top of the slices with some vinaigrette - delicious! My husband had Calamari rings which were nice and tender. My main course was a Mushroom and Vegetable Quiche with a salad and some chips. The quiche was presented in a filo pastry case and was delicious and filling! My husband had Tuna Steak served with boiled potatoes and vegetables. The serving was substantial and full of flavour! We chose Caramel and Passionfruit Puddings from the Dessert Menu to round off our meal. When we asked for the Bill we were offered some Digestif Drinks for free, which was a lovely touch. The service was very good and attentive which certainly helped to complete our positive experience of the Restaurant. Highly...
