Churrasqueira Angolana — Restaurant in Loulé

Positive comment about food after negative description about the ambiance.

The ambiance is not enjoyable to me: there is no view, at night the place is fairly well lit but it still feels fairly dark and packed, the attempt to make the place 'look like Angola' is not a curated look... It's gaudy in my opinion. There are artworks of topless Angolan women and some carved elephants. It is not romantic. The TVs are thankfully muted but they are still on nonstop. The acoustics are bad so it gets quite loud.

Their speciality foods are quite good. Though both my wife and I agree that the ambiance is not great, she still likes going back for the steak: the maminha and picanha are tasty, and I do enjoy the Portuguese desserts. The prices are good and half-portions are available for many items.

To me it seems like a regular eating-place rather than an experience.

Tip: Locals eat later, foreigners / tourists seem to eat earlier. Choose your crowd. You can and should make reservations. Waiting times for a table can get long later in the evening. Tell them that you do not want the appetizer of bread, olives and pâté, unless you actually want it. If they put it in your table 'they can't serve it to other clients anymore' so they need to bill you for it, though you didn't ask for it.

Don't get the Portuguese vegetables which are boiled and fairly tasteless unless you're into that sort of thing.

My wife and I ate maminha steak which came with fried potato chips, black beans and rice (tasty), carvinho ("Meagre") fish (very few bones but the swordfish -espada- is much better) which came with boiled vegetables (altogether not tasty and an expensive fish), a bottle of water, a mango (nice to have something fresh though not an amazing mango), and an almond (amêndoa) pudding (very tasty!) - and we were billed for the starters of olives and bread which we didn't ask for or eat - and the bill was still...

Not as good as in previous years . We were early into restaurant , as restaurant filled up were served last . The potatoes on the meal were not fresh could have been re heated from lunch time service . We got 9 olives in a portion !!! No smiles from serving staff . All in all not a nice evening meal experience . Steak meal not the best cut at 18 Euro only came with chips ! no salad , no veg. Meals poor value . First time at this restaurant, very modern. I had the monkfish and prawn kebab, asked for potatoes instead of chips and my husband had pork skewers and chips. We ordered the couvert which was tasty, and a fizzy water with half a house wine. The wine was delicious at 5 euros, not too long a wait for food, my 2 kebabs was delicious, plenty of thick monkfish, my husband had 4 pork kebabs. We shared a cheesecake and had 2 coffees.
