I came to this restaurant mostly led by the review rating, the location and the lack of other options. Although the view, the atmosphere and the service are great, I was not that amazed by the food. The prices are above average (actually some I would rate as overpriced) but you end up paying more because of the "high-end" style of the restaurant than due to the quality of the food. The food was not bad, but it wasn't great either. I had better meals for a lot cheaper, although the places were not as good looking as this one. So overall I would rate this place as okay. If you want a nice atmosphere, a tourist friendly restaurant, and a nice view this is the place. On the other end be prepared to pay more than you should for what you get.

I most certain 5 of 5 stars for Restaurante Varanda do Alentejo. While visiting the castle we popped into this restaurant because it was the only one open so late in the evening after driving for a few hours to get to the very secluded mountaintop retreat. The streets are TINY compared to American standard so make sure you drive a narrow / small car as parking is almost not an option. But once you arrive - having dinner here will make you forget all about that and you'll be most grateful for the service, quality and portions of all the freshly prepared dishes! I had the fish soup and would drive all that way again just for that!

Good local place with great views, good food and helpful service. The place did what all other Portuguese restaurants do - offered bread, olives and pate on the table at the start of the meal and charged us for what we ate. Do not be dissuaded by the low star reviews - these people do not understand local customs. If those travelers bothered to read th menu, they would have seen the bread, butter and pate prices clearly listed. Instead, if you do not want bread, etc., send it back when offered. Choose the local specialties (clearly marked on the menu) and you will not be disappointed.

Um bom restaurante, com um menu com algumas especialidades alentejanas e outras da cozinha tradicional portuguesa. Boa seleção de vinhos. Serviço eficiente e simpático. Localizado dentro da vila de Marvão, com uma bela vista panorâmica.
