Carpintaria — Restaurant in Palmela

If you are lucky enough to be in or close to Palmela, make sure you find the time to visit this absolute gem of a restaurant. (We went THREE times during our stay!) Rafael serves amazing food with incredible value.

His delicious burgers rival the very best we’ve had in the states (and we get them quite frequently). I will dream about the fantastic hand cut fries, perfectly crisp and seasoned. We tried a prego as well - delicious, tender, flavorful beef on a Portuguese roll. And the pao with chourico and cheese was a tasty and filling snack. They had a great variety of beers and my boyfriend was so glad to find a Lagunitas IPA! We devoured everything, so only a photo of the fries. 😛 I’m fairly certain you cannot go wrong with any of the menu items.

But even beyond the food was the sense of welcome and warmth established by Rafael and his wife. We felt like locals, elbow to elbow with the friendly regulars and even got to watch a football game with them. This place is like Cheers, everyone knows your name. (Rafael remembered ours each time!)

If you are able to visit at a slower time, see if Rafael can tell you the history of the establishment and how he is honoring his family who have been an important part of the town for generations. His passion and pride in his food, family and hometown inspire me. I feel like I made a new friend in Rafael and I intend on returning someday to Palmela to see him and his wife and enjoy more delicious meals.

Rafael is a great cook and he makes anyone feel welcome like they belong here. The food and thd friendship make you want to come back again and again.

Start with a gigantic burger with fries, topped with grilled onions and cheese, accompanied by a local red wine, Eat at your own pace while enjoying the congenial atmosphere. Finish with a shot to get your engine running.

If it's a football night, watch a game and hobknob with the locals.

You must try Carpintaria if you are in Palmela, or if you are staying anywhere near by, it is worth making the trip! The burger was outstanding, genuinely one of the best burgers I have ever eaten. Every element in the burger was executed perfectly and made with passion and care. Rafael the owner is a great guy and I wish him all the best as he deserves great success.
