El Jefe Bar & Street Food — Restaurant in Portimão

We were visiting from Canada and from Spain. We waited for 1 and a half hours for the food and it didn’t arrive. The problem was not because of the waiting time. It was rather the service, communication, and most importantly the attitude of the staff. We ended up leaving the place and not eating there. We had my 2 year old daughter with us and it was horrible to make her go through hunger at her age.

Reply to your response: First of all you are a loser because you should take the feedback and work on yourself instead of responding like this and discrediting customers. What you said is not accurate. The waiter came to take the order and disappeared before we called him again. Even the drinks took him 15 min to serve. You know nothing about the restaurant business. If customers came in the last, does this mean they have to wait for all others to be served for more than an hour? Let me start by saying I mean no harm or disrespect to this restaurant, but I want to give an honest review. The place isn’t bad—it’s just okay. Nothing particularly memorable or extraordinary.

One thing that stood out was the language barrier. Since the restaurant is in a tourist area, I was surprised that the waiter didn’t speak English. That in itself wasn’t an issue, but he did express frustration that we didn’t speak Portuguese, which made the interaction a bit uncomfortable.

As for the food, it was average. I shared half a burger and half a plate of soft fish tortilla with a friend. The burger had so much guacamole that it overwhelmed the other ingredients. The tacos were better. The wine was good, though.

Absolutely brilliant, cannot recommend enough. This restaurant is our absolute fav In Portimao. Basically the whole menu is Gluten Free / Wheat free!! For us that is an absolutely huge bonus point as my 6YO is Gluten intolerant. Most other Restaurants say they are with very limited menus only offering 1 type pasta and no bread items which to a 6yo is torture!

We visited here twice in our trip over as we love Mexican food and this was perfect!! The staff are very welcoming and the manager (Carlos) is awesome. He basically joined us for pudding and was an amazing host who himself is Gluten intolerant so knows his stuff. He even has a stash of very very decent GF puddings. So we are very very happy customers.
