Place to avoid. We ordered two espresso coffees and one 'pastel de nata' (typical portuguese custard tart). They served us two large cups of coffee (cheap instant americano style) and something similar in shape to the 'pastel de nata' but nothing to do with the authentic one - mediocre taste and texture. When we told the waitress we had asked for an espresso and not an instant coffee, she rudely said that what we had been served was espresso (are you kidding me?!!?!). She couldn't be bothered to spend even a few seconds with us trying to see whether there had been a misunderstanding and immediately walked away. We were treated with contempt and charged 5€ - much more expensive than the average in Madeira. For less than half the money you can have proper coffe and pastel in the majority of places on the island. Unfortunately when you're a tourist some people just don't care because they assume you are unlikely to come back soon; in their mind, politeness is not worth the effort. Whenever I'll be in Madeira, I will never ever go back...

I was shocked when I found the reviews for this restaurant as they do not reflect the experience I had at all. We were a group of six, seated upstairs and outside, which was nice as the restaurant was very busy. We started with bolo do caco for the table, which was probably the second-best we had in our seven-day stay on the island. I ordered espada com banana (I understand there are disagreements on whether this is a traditional dish enjoyed by locals or a dish designed for tourists; regardless, it was sensational).

The sides were brought out and shared with the table (salad, rice, french fries, and another side I can't recall), and there was MORE than enough to go around. I had a coffee, which was very good, and finished with passion fruit pudding (I barely had room, but it was so delicious I made room). We paid around 20 euros per person for what felt like a FEAST. We left with full bellies and smiles. Eating here was one of my fondest food memories...

This small restaurant is a busy, bustling place, run by family, serving locals and tourists in a very touristy area. We were told a 20-30 minute wait at lunchtime (due to the limited seating), but it only took 10 minutes. We found the staff super friendly and watched as they were really hustling in cramped quarters. We only wanted soup and traditional garlic bread and found our orders to be great. Hot, tasty food in a decent quantity. Others around us were getting full on meals - so much so that they had to bring side tables for all the plates! Come for tasty food in an authentic atmosphere and just enjoy the experience that something different offers.

Four words. NOT WORTH THE MONEY. They charge 3 euro PER water?? Hamburger bread was way to thick and grainy one of the worst hamburgers. You can get less soggy and tastier fries at McDonald’s. Salad was plain not enough meat or cheese for the price. The toilets couldn’t even lock!! And they were wery small. The only positive I have is the bread you get as a starter it was quite tasty, but not as hamburger bread! Owerall don’t recommend (also a nitpick is the waitress called me lady instead of miss or mam Wich came of as rude )
