O Páteo do Garrett — Restaurant in Sintra

May 23, 2024 We had bacalhau à brás (salted cod, eggs and potatoes), one of the most famous and classic Portuguese dishes, for lunch. It resembled fried rice at first sight, but it tasted far from it and was really delicious! While waiting for dessert, my dad told me that he saw a dog behind the counter, so I immediately went to check out the dog. However, he seemed to be sleeping and I could only see his back from a distance. Therefore, I decided to come back later. To my surprise, a man who seemed to be the restaurant owner came up and beckoned “come over” to me as soon as I returned to my seat. I happily followed him behind the counter, and the friendly dog came close to me with a wagging tail. He instantly melted my heart. Slow service and food was not great. My mother, a 64 year old lady, asked for something someone else had already asked for and the server said “same one someone else already ordered?”, as in “I know stupid. I heard it”. They do not accept credit cards and have no sign letting guests know. We ended up having to be escorted to an ATM a mile away on foot to withdraw the money.

Wir waren heute zu viert in diesem Restaurant zum Mittagessen und bestellten uns vier Mal das Rindersteak mit schwarzen Pfeffer, nachdem uns der Geruch des Grills mit Holzkohle gelockt hat. Die gewünschte Garstufe wurde bei der Bestellung nachgefragt und später wohl ignoriert. Das Fleisch war totgebraten, durchwachsen und kam überaschend nicht vom Grill, der noch von zwei rauchenden Köchen abgebürstet wurde. Die Pommes waren vollgesogen mit Fett und schlabbrig, wahrscheinlich war die Fritteuse noch nicht auf Temperatur. Das wurde uns auch von der Bedienung bestätigt, als er dies nach unserem Hinweis noch auf unserem Teller testete. Unterbrochen wurde das Essen, als nach einer Windböe der grosse Sonnenschirm auf unseren Tisch fiel und einem von uns das T-Shirt zeriss und knapp am Kopf verfehlte.
