The service was ok but the food wasn’t great. We chose this place hoping for traditional Portuguese food but it fell short of the mark. The cod dish was swimming in olive oil which dulled the flavor, the fish was a little dry and not what we have come to expect from these dishes of the region. One of the things we didn’t appreciate was the appetizers that arrived at our table - we didn’t order them but they arrived anyway, a very small cheese plate and a little duo of pork and mushrooms, they were ok but they charged us at the end for what we believed to be complimentary. Over all I don’t think that this restaurant deserves its current rating - was it an ‘off day’ ? No, I don’t think so, more likely the chef has, like many other places, become complacent and just serves up food for the masses without really caring about the quality. Overall I’m sorry to say that I wouldn’t chose to eat here again and I can’t make a good recommendation for...
Read moreThey gave us an appetizer without asking us, which we thought was on the house. Later on, they added it to the bill and the appetizer itself amounted to a whole 10 EUR. It was just some bread, cheese and butter. And we didn’t even ask for it! Seems like a very disingenuous thing to do.
The food was average, not good, not bad. The codfish came with a disproportionately big amount of very oily chips, with oil covering the entire bottom of the plate, making it very uninviting to eat. The plating was not specifically appealing, more like an average tavern style, not reflecting the price of the meal. The wine was good. The food came very quickly. The restaurant was awfully quiet, there was no music playing, so talking seemed like a little bit too much.
In summary, if you want a good food experience, and not just a quick bite when you’re hungry, go...
Read moreGreat restaurant. A proper northern Portuguese meal… delicious, rustic but refined, and with very generous portions.
Cod+cornbread, boar chops and maminha steak all very good. And maybe even better than the meats were the sides than came with them.. oven baked small potatoes, well oiled green beans, black beans with pork and a little exotic spice and a kind of succotash-y corn/eggplant/garbanzo/mushroom/onion mix
Good local wine options as well, and wonderful service. English spoken.
It does get busy in summer so be prepared to wait.
Not inexpensive but very good value considering quantity, quality and the fact that you’re in a vacation area. 3 people can be 25-30€ a head, maybe even less depending on your wine/dessert spending.
It’s northern Portugal so two “small” doses are going to be a big full meal...
