During a road trip through Slovenia, we stumbled upon Gostilna Ribič by chance, and what a delightful discovery it was! Despite not having a reservation, we were warmly welcomed and seated, setting the tone for a memorable evening. We had the privilege of dining during the "Restaurant Week" special, a culinary experience that far exceeded our expectations.
I opted for the reserved Amfora Rdeče wine, a truly unique gem. This wine's distinctiveness lies in its aging process in clay amphoras, which imparts a depth and complexity rarely found elsewhere. Its dark ruby color and notes of ripe red fruits paired perfectly with the meal, and the other wines we sampled were equally impressive.
The kitchen began with a surprise starter, a delightful blend of flavors that, unfortunately, we didn’t catch the name of, likely due to the distraction of our excitement. We then indulged in the three-course meal, which was a masterpiece from start to finish. I had the scampi and swordfish ravioli, beautifully paired with smoked ham and black caviar—a divine combination. The following dish, grilled cauliflower with duck soup, was simply exquisite.
The highlight of my meal was the Black Angus tenderloins, served with sweet potato, beetroot, and garlic paste—a marriage of flavors that was both bold and harmonious. My partner had the Chabot fillet with sautéed chicory and garlic, which she declared one of the finest fish dishes she had ever tasted.
To finish, we enjoyed a marvellous twist on the classic Napoleon dessert, with chestnut filling—an indulgent and satisfying end to the evening.
Gostilna Ribič is a hidden treasure in Ptuj, easily worthy of Michelin recognition. Every aspect, from the ambiance to the impeccable service and exquisite food, was outstanding.

Read moreSeems like a very nice place but a bit difficult to comunicate in English unfortunately. The waitress told us English is no problem so we asked if it was ok to eat outside she told us to wait and she will check.
After a while waiting someone came out and told us to wait a bit longer. Then finally the waitress came out again and said our table is ready inside. ?? We told her that as we asked we only wanted to eat outside because it was sunny and nice and we were with the dogs. She said it is not possible. Then someone (manager) I guess came out and said that our table is waiting for us. So we explained again that we asked only to eat outside and we were told it is not possible unfortunately.
We understand if it is not possible to eat outside but since we were waiting now for quite a while we asked if we could drink something outside and they said yes. Also we felt a bit like they were blaming us for the misunderstanding when it was clear they did not understand our question on the first place but we were happy to get a drink and enjoy it outside.
So we asked if they had Union dark beer and the waitress said yes, then she brought us a normal lager union beer. 🤷♀️
We did not complain and just took what we got as obviously it is a bit tricky to communicate. No worries I guess miscommunication happens. We understand if their English is not good of course but we were just surprised as they said...
