This restaurant is, so far, my favorite Thailand restaurant. The owner is a native Thailand lady, so by far, it's very authentic.
I like the Tom Yam (hot and sour soup from Thailand). The broth has a well-balanced flavor of sour taste and spiciness. The coconut gravy is just right, not too thick and not too runny, and smells good. I also like the Penang curry. Again, the gravy is just right, not too thick and not too runny. The taste of it reminds me of the authentic Curry in Penang (Malaysia).
Why am I so fussy about the gravy? The texture of the gravy is essential in Asian cuisine. As if it's too runny, one might feel they are drinking water instead of gravy. But, on the other hand, if it's too thick (and spicy), no one can swallow it and might choke on it.
If you need a clear soup to clear your sore throat, you can try the Kwe Tiaw noodle soup. It has a taste of Pho hoa (the famous Viet Nam soup), minus the strong flavor of cinnamon and coriander. But it has the same Kwetiau (rice noodle), clear broth, and thin slices of protein (beef, chicken, or prawns).
They also provide the Som Tam, Thai Salad. In its original flavor, they use unripe papaya, but Khao Hom uses carrots as its ingredients. But they did a good job, as the sauce's flavor is authentic.
They also provide Sushi. I am not a fan of fried Sushi, but apparently, it is more appealing for kids and teens. I am also not a fan of its Sushi due to its size. Sushi should be in the proper size, one bite size.
The other thing is that this restaurant could do better in serving teas and coffee, offering more variety, especially jasmine teas.
Lastly, I love that this restaurant only...
Read moreI've been here twice before, and enjoyed the food immensely. Despite being there just last week, I really wouldn't mind going again today! I look for the opportunity to share my experience with friends and family and introduce them to what I consider a hidden gem of flavour in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town.
Our first visit was 2 years ago and we were waited by what I believe was the owner/manager/chef. This lady clearly knew the flavours and intricacies of the dishes inside and out - advising, explaining and customizing our meals to our needs and the amount of chilli-heat we wanted. The place was very small at that time and underrated.
But now in 2023, they've revamped, the seating area is much larger, there's dedicated friendly waitresses. It's neatened up and appears they're doing well. From the Google reviews and great ratings... I can vouch for them, Khao Hom has earned every star.
We ordered the Basil & Chicken Stir-Fry, the Khao Man Kai and the Red Curry, with some extra Chilli to test our palate, my whole family enjoyed thoroughly. Admittedly the sushi Platter we ordered was not the best in Cape Town, but for the price you're paying (and buy 1 get 1 free Wednesday's) it was well worth it and I would buy it again.
Their prices are reasonable, we could take leftovers. The first time we were there we got free wantons. The Thai flavours appeased my Indian taste buds and they've got so much more on the menu I'd like to go try out. I will be going again in the...
Read moreI find it's not easy to find authentic, good and flavorsome Thai food in Cape Town, so I was very pleased to finally get to satisfy my cravings! If you are looking for a more authentic experience, then I can recommend this place. Just be mindful of times around load shedding, because it will mean a longer waiting period for your food - something the staff did also advise us about which I appreciated. It ended up being quite a long wait in the end for us, but I could see the staff were under the pump as they were quite busy (always a good sign). We got our starter after the main course, and I would have preferred if my partner and I could have received our meals at the same time but I have a feeling the staff usually aim for that, it was just extremely busy (Valentine's Day!). The staff overall were very pleasant and welcoming, and attentive. Lovely space also, nicely decorated which creates a nice ambiance. My green Thai curry was delicious, thank you! I was just a little bit disappointed in the portion size, it could have been bigger or had a bit more curry sauce in it to soak up the rice. My partner ordered the Pad Thai and it was out of this world! Great portion size (big, full plate!) and it was hands down one of the BEST we have tasted. Pleased with the requested spice level (Thai hot!) too. I'll keep tasting my way around Cape Town for more good Thai food like this place. It's definitely worth a meal, or two or...
