Heat Grill Room — Restaurant in Gauteng

Heat & Grill Room is a trendy restaurant having among the best locations in the Woodlands Mall, Pretoria East. There is adequate parking only metres away in front of the restaurants, with reserved bays for persons with disabilities. A picturesque ramp, with handrail, leads up to the doorway. The restaurant also boasts a comfortable waiting area. The restaurant has multiple seating areas, including an upstairs dining area, and most areas have very good views out to the north. I enjoyed sitting in the north-facing patio, with the water feature sound at the entrance, creating a serene backdrop to the other sounds around you. Staff are mostly courteous and readily make one feel at home. The food is very good, and they serve among the best seafood platters in the greater Pretoria area. Fellow diners / companions have, on several occasions, also indicated that their steak is also very well prepared and deliciously seasoned. The food is terrible. Horrible, horrible. I had the 900g Rib eye on the bone. I asked for it to be medium rare, but it was raw - it could easily have been a tartar. I was not happy with it, so the waiter said he will take it back to the kitchen so they can cook it again. I was horrified. Clearly there is a culinary discrepancy in the restaurant. How do you even cook a steak twice?

The service is terrible. The waiters are clueless about what is on the menu and the drinks come out very slow. The restaurant was empty so I didn't understand why this was so. Even on the drinks, the waiters cannot distinguish between gin and vodka. They are nice people, just not adequately trained.

The shortrib is not worth it. You are better off braaing at home.

The sides are terrible. The fries are soggy and have an aftertaste. The basmati is stale. Not fresh and not appetizing.

We asked for the manager and relayed our grievance, merely said okay. Did not offer an apology or something else. The hospitality is zero.

The atmosphere and setting of the place is great! My seafood platter was excellent, but unfortunately my wife couldn't say the same of her 400gr rump espatada, which was a disappointment. Her steak was cremated at the top of the espatada so badly that it gave off black powder residue in your hand when you touched it, and you could taste the gas in the meat. Her chips was also oily, and you could taste the oil was old and used too many times. When we pointed this out to the manager, he just said sorry and he will look into the matter, but he didn't even offer to rectify the problem by replacing my wife's meal with better quality and fresher food. We went there for our wedding anniversary, and they got everything else right, from the roses on the table before the time, till the complimentary Italian kisses with "Happy Anniversary" written in sugar and cinnamon on the bottom of the plate.
