Culinary paradise for trainspotters. Filled with knickknacks and vintage wrecks, it's a pretty atmospheric spot for dinner. They are still working on the final touches, but I think they have a grand future ahead. The food is good. The pork belly and mash was expertly prepared and the flavours worked well. Unfortunately, our initial excitement was dampened by a series of incongruencies that don't belong in a establishment operating at their price-point. The rump steak, cooked perfectly to order, was let down by the Stella Biltong Jalapeno sauce-thing slopped over it. It certainly looked the part, but the sauce had no discernable depth in flavour and the accompanying potato wedges were basically an overwhelming crust of salt around a nicely fluffy potato center. It wasn't quite to my taste, but I can list a bunch of my salt-addicted mates who would love it. Our starters took over 40 minutes to arrive although I could smell the Pizza Bombs from the kitchen for at least 15 minutes before our waiter finally showed up and we could ask him if it was ready. The fact that the bombs and the steak strips were getting cold by the time it arrived means it was probably a service problem and not a kitchen problem. The main course only took 20 minutes to reach our table. All the staff are incredibly friendly but communication is a bit lacking. By the time most of the restaurant had cleared out and plenty of staff were standing around having a chat, we asked three different waiters for our bill because we couldn't find the gent who served us. When our actual waiter finaly showed up 15 minutes later, he still didn't know we had asked for the bill. I should be giving them 3 stars instead of 4, but I think our issues were isolated, and a bit of training will make this...

Social Grill is probably the restaurant with the best setting and atmosphere in Pretoria, and until our most recent visit, the food never failed to impress.

However, on Wednesday night I was really disappointed by the fact that their prices has escalated significantly while the quality of the food seems to have deteriorated. I had the pork belly and although the meat was superbly prepared and the crackling perfect, the flavouring was bland and unimpressive, especially at the price.

Instead of a reduction of sorts as stated on the menu, there was only a couple of apple crumbs on top with no discernible taste. The mash tasted like powder Smash and the gravy like a ‘just add water’ packet of Knorr.

My family opted for pizza and although it was okay, it was nothing to rave about.

While the staff were very friendly as always, we waited nearly 30 minutes for our drinks to arrive when we first got there.

In the past, Social Grill’s food was great value at reasonable prices. Now, the meat dishes are in the high price range and come without any starch or vegetables, which has to be ordered separately at an additional cost.

Still a great place to dine, but I hope management can rethink the menu and get back to where it was in terms of...

An amazing ambiance at night, great service. Amazing food, a jaw dropping variety of drinks, and everything is very well priced. I planned a birthday party at Social Grill but was so impressed that I will definitely go back simply to have a drink. The aesthetic is that of a mixture of quaint decorations that meets the modern world very well with some industrial design here and there. It is a well designed ensemble for all eras with a bit of old culture thrown in. But the vibe is great for young adults 25-35 years of age but is also inclusive of older generations. The manager there "Michelle" is very kind and accommodating and our waitress "Linda" is the best I've ever seen! When ever I turned my back for another drink or meal she was there. No irritating checking or lack of presence. She was perfect. As a smoker it's also rare to find a place that does t shove you in a poorly ventilated box. I applaud the owners and management for what they've accomplished here.

Room for Improvement I visited The Social Grill on Father's Day with high hopes, but the experience was a mixed bag. While I appreciated the complimentary beer and welcoming gesture, the food and service had some missteps. Our party experienced a lengthy wait for our meals, and when my kebab arrived, it was unfortunately extremely dry and overcooked. I appreciated the manager's prompt response in replacing it with a new kebab, however the replacement dish lacked flavor. Then to add, they are on the more expensive side which is not really justified with quality of service and food. The atmosphere was pleasant, although a bit overcrowded, which is understandable for a special occasion like Father's Day. Overall, I think The Social Grill has potential, but there's room for improvement in terms of food quality and consistency. I'd be happy to recommend giving them a try if you looking for a special outing with a group of friends/family.
